This story simply had to be told, once again. The reason I'd been pondering and trying to tell it for so long is because of what Venezuela has endured over the last 25 years; today, almost 9 million Venezuelans have emigrated.

They've left due to hunger, fear, and insecurity. Venezuela transformed from a prosperous country that welcomed immigrants from all over with open arms into a devastated land from which one must flee far away, escaping to foreign lands, sometimes with a different language and always far from the warmth we're used to.

Right now, it's crucial to remember that Venezuela and who we truly are, because seeing it again is to create it anew.

Caribia, sea of freedom

In the twilight of the 1930s, a shadow fell upon Europe. Old Austria, a mere whisper of its former glory, was consumed by a darkness that promised an unending night of shattered crystals.

The year is 1938. The air crackles with a new, terrifying sound – the tramp of Nazi boots, the hiss of hatred. Violins fall silent. And the world turns its gaze away.

When your very thoughts become a crime… when hell itself calls at your door… there is only one desperate choice.

To run. To abandon everything. Family. Memories. Life itself.

From Hamburg, a ship sets sail. Carrying souls bound by a shared terror, many of them Jewish, searching for the breath of the open sea. But the ocean offers no easy solace.

Hope flickers, then dies. Orders from distant capitals betray their desperate plea. A promised haven vanishes. And the monstrous command from Berlin rings out: "Return now!"

Back into the storm? Back to the waiting darkness of suffering and death?

One man's defiance. One final desperate gamble. A forgotten land. And a noble president who dares to stand against the tide.

As the U-boats prowl, a miracle unfolds. A symphony of light and sound. Strangers with open arms.

In the heart of despair, Venezuela, a beacon of humanity.

This is the story of the Caribia, its passengers and its crew and of all good Venezuelans.
