Inspiration
Global air cargo powers international trade, but its compliance workflows remain fragmented, paper-driven, and heavily dependent on manual verification. Exporters, airlines, and customs authorities often work on disconnected systems, making it difficult to verify regulatory compliance, detect hazardous cargo, and establish trust between stakeholders.
We wanted to solve a much deeper problem than simply digitizing paperwork. Our goal was to build a platform where AI assists with regulatory decision-making, real-time events keep every stakeholder synchronized, and cryptographic integrity guarantees that compliance records cannot be secretly altered.
CargoSetu is our vision of what the future of air cargo compliance should look like.
What it does
CargoSetu is an AI-powered, event-driven platform that securely connects Exporters, Airlines (Ground Handling Agents), and Customs Regulators into a single real-time ecosystem.
The platform automates multiple layers of export compliance:
1.AI automatically classifies products into HS Codes.
2.A hybrid compliance engine evaluates sanctions, DGFT licensing requirements, and SCOMET dual-use restrictions.
3.Dangerous Goods (DG) shipments are automatically detected and placed on regulatory hold.
4.An AI compliance agent evaluates DG packaging against IATA regulations and generates an instant Risk Score.
5.Apache Kafka synchronizes shipment milestones across all dashboards in real time.
6.Every compliance decision is cryptographically secured using a SHA-256 hash chain, providing Customs with a tamper-evident audit trail.
Instead of relying on paper documents and trust, CargoSetu creates mathematical proof of compliance.
How we built it
Our primary focus was building an enterprise-grade backend capable of supporting thousands of concurrent cargo events while maintaining security and transparency.
AI Layer
Using Spring AI with OpenAI/OpenRouter, CargoSetu performs:
- Zero-shot HS Code Classification
- Dangerous Goods Detection
- SCOMET Evaluation
- AI-powered IATA Packaging Risk Assessment
Event-Driven Architecture
Every important shipment milestone is published through Apache Kafka, allowing different user roles to receive updates instantly without tightly coupling the application components. Examples include:
- Shipment Created
- Compliance Hold Applied
- Dangerous Goods Declared
- Airline Accepted Cargo
- Ready For Carriage
- Customs Audit Completed
This architecture makes the platform scalable and highly responsive.
Cryptographic Ledger
One of the most technically challenging features was designing a blockchain-inspired ledger directly inside PostgreSQL. Every important compliance event stores:
- Previous Hash
- Current SHA-256 Hash
- Timestamp
- Event Metadata Each record references the previous record, creating an immutable chain. If any historical data is modified, every subsequent hash becomes invalid, immediately revealing tampering during Customs audits.
Challenges we ran into
Building CargoSetu involved solving several complex engineering challenges.
Real-Time Synchronization
Maintaining consistency between three independent dashboards while avoiding tight coupling required us to design an event-driven workflow using Apache Kafka.
AI + Deterministic Rules
Not every compliance decision should rely entirely on AI. We combined:
- deterministic rule-based validation for sanctions and licensing
- probabilistic AI reasoning for regulatory interpretation
This hybrid architecture significantly improved reliability.
Dangerous Goods Risk Assessment
Evaluating packaging instructions against IATA regulations is inherently complex. Designing prompts that consistently produced meaningful risk assessments required significant experimentation and prompt engineering.
Tamper-Evident Audit Trail
Instead of using blockchain frameworks, we engineered our own lightweight cryptographic ledger using PostgreSQL and SHA-256 hash chaining.
This delivered blockchain-like integrity without introducing unnecessary infrastructure complexity.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Some of the features we're most proud of include:
- AI-assisted export compliance automation
- Real-time synchronization across three independent stakeholders
- Kafka-powered event-driven backend architecture
- AI-generated Dangerous Goods Risk Assessment
- Blockchain-inspired SHA-256 compliance ledger
- Clean enterprise-grade UI with responsive dashboards
- Horizontally scalable system architecture
- Production-style separation of responsibilities between Exporters, Airlines, and Customs
Rather than building another CRUD application, we built an ecosystem where AI, distributed systems, and cryptographic security work together to solve a real-world logistics problem.
What we learned
CargoSetu significantly expanded our understanding of enterprise software engineering.
Throughout development we gained practical experience in:
- Designing event-driven architectures with Apache Kafka
- Building scalable backend services using Spring Boot
- Integrating Large Language Models into production workflows
- Engineering secure audit systems using cryptographic hashing
- Combining AI reasoning with deterministic business rules
- Managing distributed application state
- Designing enterprise-grade frontend architectures
More importantly, we learned that AI is most effective when combined with strong software architecture rather than replacing it.
What's next for CargoSetu: The AI-Powered, Tamper-Evident Air Cargo Network
CargoSetu is designed as a foundation for a much larger intelligent logistics ecosystem.
Our future roadmap includes:
Multi-Modal Logistics
Extend beyond air cargo to support:
Sea Freight Rail Freight Road Transportation
through a unified compliance platform.
Live Regulatory Intelligence
Continuously synchronize:
- DGFT Notifications
- SCOMET Updates
- IATA Dangerous Goods Regulations
- Global Sanctions Lists
to ensure every compliance decision uses the latest regulations.
Predictive AI
Move beyond reactive compliance by predicting:
- customs delays
- shipment risks
- documentation errors
- regulatory bottlenecks
before they occur.
Digital Trade Documents
Support secure digital versions of:
- Air Waybills
- Commercial Invoices
- Packing Lists
- Certificates of Origin
with cryptographic verification.
Enterprise Scalability
Evolve CargoSetu into a cloud-native microservices platform capable of processing hundreds of thousands of shipment events across multiple international airports. Ultimately, our vision is to build an intelligent, transparent, and globally trusted digital infrastructure for cross-border logistics - where AI accelerates compliance, distributed systems enable real-time collaboration, and cryptographic integrity establishes trust across the entire supply chain.
