Inspiration Remembering everything that happens between medical appointments can be difficult. Symptoms may come and go, medication courses can change and important details can be forgotten by the time someone visits their clinician.

We built CareTrail to make it easier for people to organize their health experiences and communicate them clearly during appointments.

What it does CareTrail is a mobile-first web application that allows users to:

Record symptoms, injuries, consultations, and other health-related events.

Track ongoing and completed medication courses.

Photograph medication labels for future reference.

Record when events happened while preserving their original recording timestamps.

Generate chronological, printable visit summaries.

Start a new visit record while retaining their profile and ongoing medications.

All information is patient-reported. CareTrail does not diagnose conditions, interpret medication photographs, or provide medical advice.

How we built it We developed CareTrail using HTML, CSS, and vanilla JavaScript.

The application uses two browser storage technologies:

localStorage: Stores structured information, including patient profiles, medication records, and events.

IndexedDB: Stores medication-label photographs as compressed image Blobs.

CareTrail works entirely within the browser without requiring a backend, cloud database, or API keys.

Our team divided development into four responsibilities: interface design, local storage and photo persistence, report generation, and application integration.

Challenges we ran into One of our biggest challenges was ensuring that medication photographs and structured records remained available after refreshing or reopening the browser.

We also had to carefully handle incomplete medication information, preserve original event timestamps, maintain stable medication identifiers, and ensure starting a new visit record did not accidentally delete ongoing medication information.

Coordinating different JavaScript modules across four Git branches was another important learning experience.

Accomplishments that we're proud of We successfully implemented browser-based storage without requiring a backend.

Our automated browser tests covered storage, editing, reporting, and failure recovery. We also verified photo and profile persistence using an actual iPhone running Safari.

We created an interface designed around accessible controls, medication-label photographs, and chronological visit reports.

What we learned This project strengthened our understanding of JavaScript ES modules, browser storage, IndexedDB, Git branching, collaborative development, mobile-first design, and real-device testing.

We also learned how important it is to preserve missing information honestly rather than inventing details in a health-related application.

What's next for CareTrail We hope to improve accessibility, strengthen data portability and backup options, and continue refining the experience based on user feedback.

CareTrail remains a hackathon prototype, not a dependable medical record or clinical decision-making tool.
