Inspiration

An unexpected ER visit during Cal Hacks made fragmented answers, waiting and family updates personal. Patients and caregivers often ask related questions without a clear shared view.

What it does

CareSide is a working synthetic patient companion with Richard, a customizable tuxedo cat. A patient records a recollection and reviews a timeline. Information stays labeled authorized-source confirmed, patient-or-family reported, general education or unknown, with sources and timestamps. Known chart questions receive sourced answers. Unknown questions from the patient and an explicitly authorized caregiver merge into one pending staff item. A simulated staff member answers once; authorized views update. The patient can review family-update drafts and revoke access. No real staff or family are contacted.

How we built it

A dedicated CREAO hospital agent is configured with Claude Sonnet 5.5 Medium. Code validates structured answers and source labels. Convex stores separate private durable cases and delivers reactive updates. Node.js serves vanilla HTML/CSS/JavaScript on Vercel. Browser dictation is feature-detected and editable before sending.

Challenges and what we learned

We kept recollection separate from clinical confirmation, distinguished a medication order from administration, and preserved unknowns instead of inventing answers. We fixed asynchronous provider polling and a reactive UI bug that erased unsent staff drafts.

What we verified

Production browser tests covered patient-reported narrative capture, patient/caregiver question deduplication, one simulated staff answer, known-source autoanswers and revocation. Separate two-browser tests verified reactive delivery. One actual CREAO answer kept four evidence categories distinct and did not infer normal results or discharge clearance. These are synthetic functional tests, not clinical validation or measured staff-time savings.

What is next

Observe patients and staff, measure understanding and repeat-question burden, and evaluate institutional security and integration requirements. No pilot, sale, endorsement or clinical benefit is established. No live EHR, real patient data, diagnosis or triage is involved.

Reused assets and boundaries

Existing native Richard SVG and companion interaction patterns were reused from Money Meow. CareSide has a separate repository, deployment, agent and case-state project. Direct Anthropic API, Bright Data and Elastic are not claimed as working integrations in this draft.
