Inspiration

To ensure the security and confidentiality of sensitive patient data, a healthcare system needs to be built using secure coding practices and encrypted communication channels.

What it does

First, it would ensure that the data is tamper-resistant, as any attempt to alter the data would be easily detectable. Second, it would provide a permanent and auditable record of all transactions involving the data, allowing for greater transparency and accountability. Third, it would allow for the secure sharing of data between different health care providers, as the data would be encrypted and only accessible to those with the appropriate permissions.

How we built it

One way to incorporate the golden pillars of security into this system would be to use a blockchain-based platform to store and manage the sensitive patient data. This would allow the data to be stored in a secure, decentralized manner, with each participant in the network maintaining a copy of the data.

Challenges we ran into

When you're participating in a hackathon with as sensitive a problem statement as one that concerns healthcare, there are multiple challenges you run into. It's always tricky to come up with and design a functional user interface that is easy, accessible and friendly. Another challenge that we ran into was the building and integration of a blockchain database. Core development of the blockchain database using NodeJS and MongoDB is something that can take hours to perfect - which was necessary due to the inherent sensitive and attack-prone nature of the healthcare data the project is going to be operating with.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

The development of the blockchain using NodeJS was definitely a eureka moment. It is a stark contrast between building on top of other blockchains and building one on your own. The schema, functions, and the security that the cryptographic mazes of a blockchain bring out was an accomplishment.

What we learned

Multiple aspects of development - from technologies to processes. Coming up with functional requirements commenced our journey as developers into building an in-fashion and exciting project which has much potential for scalability in the future. From the specifications to the design and then to the implementation, multiple tools and technologies were experimented with. We realized more intently what technologies do we like to work with as developers and what are our most productive hours.

What's next for CareLinkUp-Secure and easy access to sensitive patient data

The fact that healthcare is ever-evolving and is the pinnacle of a quality society establishes that there will always be prospects of improvement in our system. Our motive is to make healthcare a safer, coordinated and accessible field for all stakeholders involved. Blockchain is merely a means to achieve it. One issue that we seek to resolve in the future is an edge case - a user might be at life or death crossroads and would be the last person to be able to coherently provide access to their health records. A solution from the top off our tirelessly working brains is to link all health identities with citizen identities themselves and allow the provision of basic patient records such as blood groups and any sensitive diseases. Another issue might be that of faulty records getting uploaded on the blockchain - which is a callback to the healthcare provider themself - and we think that AI could very well be utilized to track discrepancies.
