Inspiration
CareGuide was started since small accidents occur when we aren't looking. At such times most people feel scared or aren't sure what to do. That's why we decided to develop a helper which provides fast and reliable first aid help without using all the complicated medical terms.
What it does
CareGuide is an assistant designed to help with common minor injuries, offering easy-to-follow instructions on matters such as cuts and burns, sprains, stings, and nosebleeds. When under pressure it includes step-by-step instructions, clear animations, a quick search facility and a guided quiz to enable users to get the appropriate kind of assistance. The app is available in eight languages and displays obvious red flags so that people know when to seek professional help.
How we built it
We developed CareGuide as an Android application which organises the database according to injury type and category. In order to make the various steps easier to understand, we included animated explanations. We designed the search and quiz features so that people could obtain answers quickly. In order to make the app accessible all over the world, we have included support for eight languages. All the advice given in the app is drawn from reputable health organisations such as the Red Cross, the NHS, the CDC and the Mayo Clinic.
Challenges we ran into
The main difficulty was in presenting a lot of information in a way that was easy to use without the interface appearing cluttered. We had to be very careful about the words we chose, since it was our responsibility to ensure that our advice was safe and that the distinction between receiving home care and going to the hospital was clear. Additionally, getting the app to work in different languages was difficult, particularly with Arabic because it is written from right to left.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We are proud of the tool that we have developed since it is genuinely capable of assisting people in the event of a life-threatening accident. The animated instructions have been a success since they make it easy to understand the medical procedures. We are also pleased with the way the search function, the emergency signs and the different language options work together, based on verified health research.
What we learned
This project taught us how to convert medical information into a simple mobile experience. We gained a great deal of knowledge regarding user design and the specifics of making an app function in various languages. Above all, we came to realize how important it is to act responsibly when developing health technology, since when creating an app that has an effect on people's health clarity and the use of reliable sources are essential.
What's next for CareGuide
Next, we want to continue improving CareGuide by adding more first-aid topics, improving the animations and user experience, and making sure the medical information stays accurate and up to date. We also want to continue testing the app and getting feedback from users so we can make it even more useful.
