Inspiration
Some of the biggest issues in communities today are that there is not enough people to take care of the young or the elderly. With CareFinder, we're connecting people who are eager to work by babysitting children, helping take care of the geriatric population, and even doing things as small as pet sitting.
What it does
The app we built brings people together based on their needs. People who need to find care can search by category. Those who are willing and able to provide care can post so, and can set their own rates. This fulfills two needs at once; often teens people are being paid to babysit and people of all ages can aid in taking care of those who may not be able to anymore.
How we built it
The app was built in Android Studio using Java and XML. A database was also created in SQL that we didn't quite have enough time to implement. For testing, the built-in android emulator in Android Studio was used.
Challenges we ran into
This was Shane's first hackathon and Anthony's Second. This, coupled with the fact that neither of us had ever developed an Android application, made for quite a mouthful when we took a bite. Of course time was a restraint, as well as many issues with the MySQL server that we tried to implement. The AppManifest also seemed to overwrite itself as it pleased, which led to hours of troubleshooting issues that should not have occurred.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
The fact that we got an app put together was more than we had expected. We were quite delighted by a lot of our progress even though we did not get to finish everything we had hoped to.
What we learned
Both of us definitely took away a lot from building the app. We both felt inspired to work more with Android Studio and hope to develop more apps in the future.
What's next for CareFinder
Implementing the database and login features would be the next step, alongside getting this app in the Google Play Store. It was an immensely fun project that we would love to see to completion in the near future.
