Boss, here’s a polished Devpost-ready draft for TheAcademy:

Inspiration

Traditional career platforms often feel overwhelming, transactional, and disconnected from how people actually explore their futures. We created TheAcademy to make career discovery feel like entering a story—combining the atmosphere of a dark-academia virtual campus with interactive quests, meaningful choices, and AI-generated narratives.

What it does

TheAcademy is a spatial, choose-your-own-adventure career experience. Players enter a virtual campus, meet GizmoTheGem—an AI career companion—and complete story-driven quests that help them explore different skills, roles, and professional pathways.

Player decisions made through character cards, objects, and interface controls influence the direction of the narrative. The surrounding web application manages the player’s progress and choices, while the Reactor-powered video experience generates the evolving story world.

How we built it

We built the prototype as a React-based web application with an immersive, game-inspired interface designed for desktop and PICO spatial experiences.

The experience combines:

  • A React and Vite front end
  • PICO WebSpatial exploration and emulator testing
  • Reactor API integration for branching, AI-generated video
  • A separate narrative state and application state
  • Interactive character, object, and action cards
  • GizmoTheGem as the player’s guide through the experience
  • Prompt and scene logic that translates user choices into narrative changes

This structure allows the interface outside the video to actively influence the characters, environments, and events appearing inside the generated story.

Challenges we ran into

Our biggest challenge was connecting a traditional web interface to a generative video experience while keeping both systems synchronized without treating them as the same state.

We also had to:

  • Translate interface selections into clear narrative instructions
  • Maintain character and visual consistency across generated scenes
  • Design a prototype that could work across desktop and spatial hardware
  • Scope an ambitious virtual-campus concept into a functional hackathon demo
  • Balance career-development outcomes with an experience that still felt cinematic and entertaining

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We are proud that we transformed career exploration into an interactive narrative instead of another dashboard or job board.

We successfully created:

  • A distinct dark-academia career world
  • A branching narrative influenced by player decisions
  • A companion character that makes the experience feel guided and personal
  • A modular interface where characters, objects, and scene elements become narrative controls
  • A foundation that connects generative storytelling, spatial computing, and career development

Most importantly, the project demonstrates how AI-generated media can respond to user agency and become part of a larger interactive product.

What we learned

We learned that generative video becomes significantly more powerful when it is treated as a responsive world rather than passive content.

We also learned that successful branching experiences require structured state management, carefully designed prompts, and clear boundaries between what the application controls and what the narrative engine generates. Spatial design pushed us to think beyond flat screens and consider how users move, select, discover, and interact within an immersive environment.

What's next for TheAcademy

Next, we plan to expand TheAcademy into a persistent virtual career campus with:

  • More career quests, characters, and branching storylines
  • Personalized pathways based on player interests and decisions
  • Persistent player profiles, skills, achievements, and career passports
  • Multiplayer campus events and mentor-led experiences
  • Employer-sponsored quests connected to real opportunities
  • Deeper PICO and mixed-reality interactions
  • A creator system for building new quests, environments, and learning experiences

Our long-term vision is to make TheAcademy a Career OS where people can explore possibilities, build skills, develop professional proof, and unlock real-world opportunities through play.
