Inspiration

As a Nigerian university student, I watched classmates waste years in wrong courses chosen due to lack of guidance. 93% of our schools lack career counselors, leaving students to rely on peer pressure or family dictates. I spent 4 years exploring careers before finding my fit in Cybersecurity—CareerSage can save students from that uncertainty.

What it does

CareerSage provides AI-powered career guidance tailored for Nigerian and African students. It generates personalized dual-pathway plans (practical + growth), offers voice counseling, career simulation, and verified research—all understanding local contexts like JAMB, economic realities, and cultural pressures.

How we built it

Built with React, TypeScript, and Google Gemini 3 Pro API. The Smart Advisor analyzes student profiles to generate culturally-aware career recommendations. Voice Mode uses Gemini Live for real-time conversations. Career Simulator creates interactive roleplay scenarios with Nigerian contexts.

Challenges we ran into

Ensuring AI gives accurate, culturally-appropriate advice without bias. Balancing comprehensive guidance with simple, accessible design for low-bandwidth environments. Managing API costs while keeping the platform free/affordable for students who need it most.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

Created the first AI career platform specifically for Nigerian/African contexts. Designed a realistic MVP that addresses a problem affecting millions. Built dual-pathway system that balances practical stability with aspirational growth.

What we learned

Career guidance isn't just about matching interests to jobs—it's about understanding economic constraints, cultural pressures, and infrastructure realities. Students need both immediate practical paths and long-term growth visions to make confident decisions.

What's next for CareerSage

Pilot testing with 50 students in Akwa Ibom State, incorporating feedback, expanding job market data, launching Voice Mode and Career Simulator, partnering with schools and NGOs, and scaling across Africa.
