🚀 CareerPilot AI
Inspiration
Finding a job is difficult when candidates do not know how well their resume matches a specific job description. Students and fresh graduates often apply to jobs without understanding which skills they already have, which skills are missing, and what they should improve.
We built CareerPilot AI to make this process simpler and more actionable.
What it does
CareerPilot AI is an AI-powered resume and job matching assistant.
Users:
- Upload their resume as a PDF.
- Paste a target job description.
- Click Analyze.
- Get an AI-powered analysis of their career fit.
The application provides:
- 📊 Resume-to-job match score
- ✅ Matching skills
- ⚠️ Skill gaps
- 💡 Personalized recommendations
- 💪 Resume strengths
- 🎯 AI-generated interview questions
Instead of simply saying whether a candidate is qualified, CareerPilot AI explains why and shows the candidate what to improve.
How we built it
CareerPilot AI was built using:
- Next.js & React for the web application
- TypeScript for reliable application logic
- Tailwind CSS for the user interface
- Node.js API routes for server-side processing
- pdf2json for extracting text from uploaded resumes
- OpenRouter API for AI-powered analysis
- Google Gemma as the AI model
- Vercel for deployment
- GitHub for source control
The application extracts text from the uploaded PDF and combines it with the target job description. The AI analyzes the information and produces structured career insights.
AI Usage
AI is a core part of CareerPilot AI rather than an optional feature.
The extracted resume content and target job description are sent to the AI model through OpenRouter. The model analyzes the candidate's skills and the job requirements to identify:
- Matching skills
- Missing skills
- Strengths
- Personalized improvement recommendations
- Interview preparation questions
- Overall job-match assessment
The application also includes validation and a fallback mechanism so that the prototype remains usable when the external AI service is temporarily unavailable.
Challenges
One of the biggest challenges was making PDF resume processing reliable in a serverless production environment.
The initial PDF extraction approach worked locally but caused problems after deployment. We replaced the PDF parser with pdf2json and improved buffer handling and extraction logic so that uploaded resumes could be processed reliably on Vercel.
Another challenge was handling AI API availability. Since free AI providers can experience rate limits or temporary failures, we added a fallback analysis system so the application can still demonstrate its core experience.
What we learned
Building CareerPilot AI taught us that creating an AI application is more than connecting an API to a user interface.
We learned about:
- Production PDF processing
- Serverless API behavior
- AI API reliability and rate limits
- Structured AI responses
- Error handling and fallback systems
- Deploying full-stack AI applications
- Designing AI outputs that are useful to real users
Impact
CareerPilot AI can help students, fresh graduates, and job seekers understand their career readiness before applying for a position.
Instead of repeatedly asking:
"Am I a good fit for this job?"
users can get a clear starting point for improving their resume, learning missing skills, and preparing for interviews.
Future Scope
Future versions could include:
- ATS resume optimization
- Multiple resume versions
- Personalized learning resources for skill gaps
- Job recommendations
- LinkedIn profile analysis
- Multilingual resume analysis
- Job-market skill insights
- Personalized interview simulations
Conclusion
CareerPilot AI turns a resume and a job description into an actionable career roadmap.
Upload. Compare. Improve. Get Hired.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We built and deployed a complete AI-powered career analysis application from resume upload to structured career insights. We are especially proud of making PDF processing reliable in a serverless production environment and adding a fallback mechanism for AI service interruptions.
What we learned
We learned how to integrate AI into a full-stack application, process resumes reliably in production, handle AI API limitations, validate structured AI responses, and design AI-generated insights around a real user problem.
What's next for CareerPilot AI
We plan to add ATS optimization, personalized learning resources for skill gaps, job recommendations, multilingual analysis, LinkedIn profile analysis, and personalized interview simulations.
