CareerMap AI
Inspiration
What if your resume could tell you not just where you have been, but where you should go next?
As someone interested in AI and career growth, I saw how difficult it can be for students and early-career professionals to figure out which roles fit their skills, what they are missing, what they should learn next, and where to find relevant opportunities.
Most career platforms solve only one part of this problem. Some recommend jobs, some provide learning resources, and others offer career advice. I wanted to bring these pieces together into one personalized system.
That idea led me to build CareerMap AI, an AI-powered career recommendation platform designed specifically with the Indian job market in mind.
My goal was to go beyond simply saying "You should become an AI Engineer." I wanted the system to explain why that role fits, what skills are missing, what to learn, and where to find opportunities.
What it does
CareerMap AI transforms a user's resume into an actionable career plan.
Users can:
- Upload resumes in PDF, DOCX, or TXT format
- Automatically extract relevant skills and candidate information
- Get AI-powered career recommendations with match scores, salary bands, and market demand
- Identify skill gaps for their target roles
- Generate a milestone-based personalized learning roadmap
- Discover curated resources from YouTube, documentation, courses, GitHub, articles, and practice platforms
- Chat with an AI career coach for career planning, resume guidance, and interview preparation
- Find India-focused jobs and internships with filters for location and opportunity type
- Optimize their resume for a specific target role
- Track their progress through a career-readiness dashboard
The core journey is:
Resume → Skills → Career Path → Skill Gaps → Learning → Job Opportunities
How I built it
I built CareerMap AI as a full-stack application using React, FastAPI, Python, and MongoDB, with AI integrated across the core career workflow.
Frontend
I built the frontend using React and React Router, with Tailwind CSS and shadcn/ui for the interface.
I structured the application into different experiences for onboarding, resume upload, career recommendations, skill-gap analysis, learning roadmaps, AI coaching, job discovery, resume optimization, and progress tracking.
Backend
I developed the backend using FastAPI, creating REST APIs for authentication, resume processing, AI-powered recommendations, roadmaps, career coaching, and job aggregation.
I used Motor for asynchronous MongoDB operations and designed the backend around separate API flows rather than putting all application logic into a single endpoint.
Resume-to-Career Pipeline
The central part of the application is the pipeline that converts an uploaded resume into personalized career recommendations.

Resources + Job Matching
Instead of generating every feature independently, I designed the workflow so that information extracted earlier in the pipeline can influence the next stage.
For example, the skills extracted from a resume contribute to the career matching process, and the resulting career recommendation is then used to identify skill gaps and generate a learning roadmap.
Database & Authentication
I used MongoDB to store user profiles, career-related data, roadmap progress, and application information.
For authentication, I implemented JWT-based authentication with tokens stored in httpOnly cookies, providing a more secure approach than exposing authentication tokens directly to client-side JavaScript.
Job Matching
I also built an India-focused job and internship aggregation flow with filters such as role, location, and opportunity type.
This allows the platform to connect the user's career preparation with actual job opportunities, instead of stopping after providing learning recommendations.
Challenges I ran into
One of the biggest challenges I faced was working with unstructured resume data.
Every resume can have a different structure, formatting style, section names, and way of describing skills. I had to design the processing flow so that different types of resumes could still produce useful structured information for the recommendation system.
Another major challenge was making AI-generated results consistent and actionable. Simply generating career suggestions wasn't enough. I needed to connect those suggestions with skill gaps, learning resources, salary information, and job opportunities.
I also faced integration challenges while connecting the React frontend, FastAPI backend, MongoDB, authentication, AI workflows, resume processing, and job aggregation.
Handling job data was another challenge because listings can change or become unavailable, and different sources can provide inconsistent information.
Building the project alone also meant handling the frontend, backend, database, AI logic, authentication, data processing, and deployment myself. This required constantly switching between product design, debugging, and engineering decisions.
Accomplishments that I'm proud of
I'm proud that I didn't build just another AI chatbot that gives career advice.
I built an end-to-end career platform where multiple AI-powered components work together around the same user journey.
A user can start with nothing more than a resume and move through:
Career Discovery → Skill-Gap Analysis → Learning Roadmap → AI Career Coaching → Job Discovery
I'm particularly proud of making the platform relevant to the Indian job market, including India-focused salary information and job and internship opportunities.
Most importantly, I built the entire application independently, combining AI, frontend development, backend engineering, databases, authentication, data processing, and product design into one working project.
What I learned
This project taught me that building an AI application is much more than connecting an AI model to a frontend.
I learned how to:
- Design AI workflows around a real-world problem
- Process and structure unstructured resume data
- Build REST APIs using FastAPI
- Connect a React frontend with a Python backend
- Work with asynchronous MongoDB operations
- Implement JWT authentication with secure cookies
- Handle unpredictable AI-generated responses
- Build personalized recommendation workflows
- Generate dynamic learning roadmaps
- Integrate changing job and internship data
- Connect multiple AI features into one coherent product
My biggest takeaway was that AI becomes much more useful when its output leads to a concrete action.
A recommendation tells someone what they could do. CareerMap AI tries to show them what they should do next.
What's next for CareerMap AI
I want to evolve CareerMap AI from a career recommendation platform into a personal AI career companion.
My next goals include:
- More advanced resume and skill analysis
- Improved career matching using skills, experience, and market demand
- Deeper salary and job-market insights
- AI-powered mock interviews and interview simulations
- GitHub and portfolio analysis
- More advanced resume optimization
- Dynamic learning roadmaps that adapt to user progress
- Improved job and internship matching
- More detailed career-readiness analytics
My long-term vision is simple:
Help people go from "I don't know what career I should pursue" to "I know exactly what I need to do next."
