Inspiration
We’ve all seen friends or experienced ourselves, choosing a career because someone told us to, because it looked cool online, or simply because we didn’t know what else to pick. Many realize too late that it wasn’t the right path, after years of stress, wasted money, and self-doubt. We wanted to change that moment. We wanted to build something that lets students feel what a career is really like before they commit to it.
What it does
CareerLab lets students try real career tasks for one hour—like designing a logo, diagnosing a patient case, reviewing a legal scenario, or building code. They get instant feedback, understand their strengths, and receive a personalized roadmap, along with a portfolio that grows with every attempt. It helps students make choices with confidence instead of confusion.
How we built it
We started to understand what is missing in career decisions. Then we built interactive simulations that mimic real workflows and added AI-based feedback to guide users step-by-step. Everything is designed with one goal: make it feel real, practical, and encouraging.
Challenges we ran into
We struggled to balance realism with accessibility. Real jobs are complex, and turning them into meaningful 1-hour experiences is hard. Creating fair evaluation criteria and crafting feedback that feels helpful and not robotic took many iterations. But every test taught us something new.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
When we shared this idea with students, parents, and mentors around us, the most common reaction was, “I wish something like this existed when I was choosing my career.” Hearing that made us realize the depth of this problem and the real impact CareerLab can create. We shaped the model, structured the experience, and built a clear roadmap backed by strong validation and enthusiasm from early listeners who immediately resonated with the vision.
What we learned
While sharing this idea with students and parents, we learned that most people don’t struggle with a lack of options, they struggle with clarity. Almost everyone had a story about choosing a path they later questioned, simply because they never had the chance to actually try it. We learned that exposure and experience matter far more than advice, and that even one hour of hands-on insight can change a decision that shapes a lifetime.
What's next for CareerLab: Test Drive Your Future
Our next step is to partner with schools, mentors, and career experts to convert this concept into real, structured experience modules across multiple career fields. We plan to build our first version with task-based simulations, guided feedback, and portfolio creation. We want to launch pilot programs, gather real user data, and continue evolving the platform until every student can choose their future with confidence, not pressure or guesswork.
