Inspiration

Choosing the right career path is difficult, especially for students who know what skills they have but don't know what to learn next, how much they need to improve, or how their progress could affect their career readiness.

We built CareerGourd AI to act like a personal Career GPS — helping users understand where they are today and giving them a clear direction for where they want to go.

What It Does

CareerGourd AI turns a user's resume into a personalized career development plan.

Users can upload their resume, and the application automatically extracts their skills, such as Python, Machine Learning, Deep Learning, NLP, Data Science, Pandas, NumPy, and Scikit-learn.

The user can then select a target career and explore:

  • Career readiness based on the match between existing skills and the target career.
  • Skill gaps and the importance of each missing skill.
  • What-if career simulation based on daily study time.
  • Career Digital Twin showing current readiness, target career, existing skills, and skills that need improvement.
  • Career Forecast showing projected readiness over 30, 60, and 90 days.
  • Personalized Learning Roadmap that prioritizes the skills the user should focus on.
  • Today's Career Mission, which converts the roadmap into practical daily learning and practice tasks.
  • Job Search links that help users move from learning toward actual opportunities.

How We Built It

We developed CareerGourd AI as an interactive web application using Streamlit.

The application processes information from an uploaded resume, identifies relevant skills, compares them with the requirements of the selected target career, and presents the results through an interactive career dashboard.

Instead of simply showing a list of missing skills, CareerGourd AI connects skill gaps → learning priorities → study time → projected growth → actionable daily tasks.

What Makes It Unique

Most career platforms focus mainly on recommending jobs or careers.

CareerGourd AI focuses on the journey between the user's current skills and their target career.

Its Career Digital Twin and Career Forecast help users visualize their current position and understand how consistent learning can improve their career readiness over time.

The personalized roadmap then turns this information into concrete learning actions, making the system more than a career recommendation tool — it becomes a career planning and growth companion.

Challenges We Faced

One of our biggest challenges was converting unstructured resume information into meaningful skills that could be compared with a target career.

We also needed to present several different insights — skill gaps, proficiency, forecasts, learning priorities, and daily missions — without making the application complicated for the user.

Another challenge was designing a system that connects these different components into one coherent career journey.

What We Learned

Building CareerGourd AI taught us how to transform a real-world problem into an interactive AI-powered application.

We learned about resume processing, skill extraction, career-skill matching, interactive data visualization, personalized recommendations, and deploying a working web application.

Most importantly, we learned that useful AI is not just about generating information — it is about turning information into clear, actionable decisions.

What's Next

We plan to make CareerGourd AI more personalized by improving career-skill matching, expanding the number of supported careers, providing richer learning resources, and making career-readiness predictions more data-driven.

Our long-term vision is to make CareerGourd AI a complete career navigation system that helps users understand where they are, decide where they want to go, and continuously track the path between the two.
