Inspiration
Finding the right internship is often difficult for students because opportunities are spread across different platforms, job descriptions can be difficult to compare, and interview preparation is usually disconnected from the internship search process.
We wanted to build an AI-powered career companion that brings these activities together in one workflow. Instead of simply showing internship listings, CareerForge AI is designed to help a student discover relevant opportunities, understand why they may be a good fit, and prepare for the interview.
What We Built
CareerForge AI is an AI-powered career companion for internship matching and interview preparation.
The system combines internship discovery, profile-based matching, and AI-assisted interview preparation into a single application.
A student can provide their skills, interests, education, and career preferences. The application then uses this information to help identify relevant internship opportunities and provide personalized preparation.
The project focuses on making the process more structured:
- Create and manage a student career profile.
- Collect skills, interests, education, and preferences.
- Match the profile with relevant internship opportunities.
- Explain the relevance of opportunities to the student's profile.
- Provide AI-assisted interview preparation.
- Allow students to interact with the career companion through the application.
How We Built It
We built CareerForge AI as a full-stack application with a separate frontend and backend.
The frontend provides the user interface for profile management, internship discovery, matching, and interview preparation.
The backend provides the API layer and application logic. AI capabilities are integrated through Google's Gemini models to support career-oriented interactions and recommendations.
The project is structured with:
- A Vite-based frontend
- A FastAPI backend
- AI-powered career assistance
- Profile and internship data processing
- API-based communication between the frontend and backend
We focused on keeping the architecture modular so that additional internship sources, matching strategies, and career-assistance features can be added later.
Agentic Approach
CareerForge AI is designed around the idea of an AI career companion rather than a simple chatbot.
The agent receives a student's career context, reasons about the user's requirements, and assists with multiple steps of the internship journey. Instead of requiring the student to manually perform every step independently, the system brings profile understanding, opportunity matching, and interview preparation into one AI-assisted workflow.
This allows the project to move beyond a basic question-and-answer interface toward a task-oriented career assistant.
What We Learned
Building this project helped us understand the challenges involved in connecting an AI system with real application workflows.
We learned about:
- Designing AI-assisted user workflows
- Building APIs with FastAPI
- Integrating Gemini into an application
- Structuring frontend and backend services
- Managing environment variables and API credentials
- Designing profile-based matching logic
- Building a practical AI agent instead of only a conversational interface
- Deploying and debugging a full-stack application
Challenges
One of the main challenges was connecting the AI layer with the rest of the application while keeping the system reliable and understandable.
Another challenge was deployment. We had to handle frontend build configuration, backend deployment requirements, environment variables, and differences between the local development environment and the production environment.
We also had to think carefully about how internship information and student profiles should be represented so that the AI could provide useful and relevant assistance.
