Inspiration

Every student starts with a destination in mind—a software engineer, data scientist, product manager, designer, or entrepreneur. Yet the path between where they are today and where they want to be is often unclear.

Many students spend months collecting courses, certifications, and projects, hoping they are moving in the right direction. Sometimes they are. Sometimes they are simply moving.

That uncertainty inspired us to build CareerCopilot AI.

We wanted to create a platform that answers a simple but important question: "What should I do next to get closer to my goal?" Instead of generic advice, we envisioned personalized guidance that adapts to each student's unique journey.

What it does

CareerCopilot AI helps students understand how prepared they are for their target role and what steps they can take to improve.

The platform allows users to:

  • Upload a resume
  • Select a target role
  • Receive an AI-powered skill-gap analysis
  • View a readiness score
  • Get a personalized learning roadmap
  • Receive project recommendations
  • Track progress over time

Rather than recommending endless resources, CareerCopilot AI creates a structured path tailored to a student's current skills, strengths, and aspirations. The goal is not just to learn more, but to learn what matters most.

How we built it

We designed CareerCopilot AI using a modern cloud-native architecture focused on scalability, personalization, and ease of use.

The solution uses:

  • Next.js for the frontend experience
  • AWS DynamoDB for storing user profiles and roadmap data
  • Amazon Bedrock for AI-powered analysis and roadmap generation
  • Amazon S3 for document storage
  • AWS Lambda and API Gateway for backend services
  • Amazon Cognito for authentication

The journey begins with a resume upload. From there, AI extracts relevant skills, compares them against the requirements of the selected role, identifies skill gaps, and generates a personalized roadmap. Progress tracking ensures that users can see how each step contributes to their larger career goals.

Challenges we ran into

One of the biggest challenges was making recommendations feel genuinely personal.

It is easy to generate advice. It is much harder to generate guidance that feels relevant, actionable, and connected to a person's goals.

We also spent significant time designing a roadmap system where learning milestones, projects, and career progression remain connected. We wanted users to see a clear line between today's effort and tomorrow's opportunity.

Another challenge was building a scalable architecture capable of supporting many users while maintaining a smooth and responsive experience.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We are proud of building a complete end-to-end platform that transforms a static resume into a living career roadmap.

More importantly, we are proud that the solution focuses on a real problem faced by millions of students: not a lack of ambition, but a lack of clarity.

By combining AI-powered analysis with structured career planning, we created a platform that helps users move forward with greater confidence and direction.

What we learned

This project reinforced an important lesson: information alone is rarely enough.

Students today have access to countless learning resources, but what they often need most is guidance. Building CareerCopilot AI showed us how AI can be used not just to generate answers, but to create meaningful pathways toward long-term goals.

We also gained valuable experience designing scalable cloud-native systems and integrating AI into practical, real-world workflows.
