Choosing a career is one of the most crucial decisions in a student's life — yet most students make this choice without personalized guidance or real clarity. We’ve seen friends and peers struggle with information overload, conflicting advice, and anxiety around exams and opportunities.

We wanted to build something that not only recommends career paths but also explains why they’re a good match, offers a clear roadmap, and makes students feel confident in their decisions — all powered by cutting-edge AI.

When we discovered about Perplexity's Sonar APIs in one of the webinar we attended recently, we saw the perfect opportunity to build something transformative - a platform that combines the power of real-time AI intelligence with personalized career guidance.

What it does

CareerCompass is a comprehensive AI-powered platform that transforms student career confusion into clarity through:

How we built it

We used v0 by Vercel to speed up the development process and built this tool completely in last one week.

Technology Stack:

  • Frontend: Next.js 14 with TypeScript and Tailwind CSS
  • Backend: Next.js Server Actions and API Routes
  • Database: Supabase (PostgreSQL) with Row Level Security
  • Authentication: Supabase Auth with Google OAuth
  • AI Integration: Perplexity's Sonar APIs for real-time intelligence
  • UI Components: shadcn/ui for consistent design system
  • Deployment: Vercel for seamless deployment and scaling during dev, and AWS EC2 for final deployment

What we learned

We are seasoned tech players with years of experience building Tech Applications but this project brought immense learning experience. We extensively use v0 by vercel to build our application and learned the nuances of working with such applications finding workarounds to hallucination, prompting techniques and handling other AI issues. Some other learnings were

  • Context Matters: How providing rich context to AI APIs dramatically improves output quality
