Inspiration
Choosing a career can be confusing for students. Many students know the job role they want, but are not sure which skills they already have, which skills they are missing, or what they should learn next.
We wanted to build something that makes this process simpler and more practical. Instead of giving students generic career advice, CareerCompass focuses on understanding where a student currently stands and helping them move towards their career goal step by step.
What it does
CareerCompass helps students identify the gap between their current skills and the skills expected for their target career.
A student can select a career goal and provide information about their current skills, learning experience, projects, and other relevant details. CareerCompass then highlights their strengths, identifies skill gaps, and suggests a personalized roadmap to become more internship and job ready.
The goal is not to tell students what career they "must" choose, but to help them make better-informed decisions about the career they are already interested in.
How we built it
We are designing CareerCompass around a combination of data analysis, career-skill mapping, and AI/ML-based recommendations.
The basic workflow is:
Student Profile → Career Goal → Skill Comparison → Skill Gap → Personalized Roadmap
For the prototype, we are focusing on a simple and understandable user experience rather than making the system unnecessarily complicated. We plan to use Python and data analysis techniques for processing student information, with AI/ML components where they add real value.
Challenges we ran into
One of the biggest challenges was deciding how to make career guidance genuinely useful instead of creating another generic chatbot.
Students have different backgrounds, existing skills, learning speeds, and career goals, so a single roadmap cannot work for everyone.
Another challenge is deciding which skills are actually important for a particular career and how to represent the gap between a student's current level and industry expectations in a way that is easy to understand.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We are proud of turning a common student problem into a practical solution idea that can be expanded beyond just career suggestions.
Our main focus has been on making the solution student-friendly, measurable, and actionable. Instead of simply showing students a list of skills, we want CareerCompass to tell them what they can work on next and why it matters for their target career.
What we learned
While working on CareerCompass, we learned that solving an education problem is not only about adding technology.
The solution has to start with the student's actual problem. We also learned the importance of keeping recommendations simple and actionable, because too much information can make career planning even more confusing.
We are also learning how data analysis and AI can be used together to support better decision-making rather than replacing human judgement.
What's next for CareerCompass
Our next step is to develop a working prototype where students can create their profile, select a target career, view their skill gaps, and receive a personalized roadmap.
We would also like to expand the system with more career paths, project recommendations, internship readiness tracking, resume guidance, and eventually real-world industry skill data.
In the long term, our goal is to make CareerCompass a practical companion for students from college to their first internship or job.
