Inspiration
College students face the challenge of juggling multiple aspects of internship preparation — from building resumes and tracking skill development to managing personal finances and collaborating on team projects. We wanted to create a single, intuitive platform that combines these elements into one career-ready dashboard, inspired by BlackRock’s data-driven financial insights and U.S. Soccer’s teamwork and goal-tracking culture.
What it does
CareerCompass AI helps students plan, track, and optimize their internship readiness by combining:
Resume & skills analyzer: Highlights strengths, gaps, and actionable suggestions (mock AI in MVP).
Finance tracker: Provides budget projections and helps students visualize their financial goals.
Team productivity hub: Allows shared goal-setting and progress tracking, promoting collaboration and accountability. All of this is available in a single, beginner-friendly web interface designed for real-world career preparation.
How we built it
Frontend: HTML, CSS, vanilla JavaScript (React version planned).
Backend: Python + Flask.
APIs: Mocked resume analyzer API (placeholder for OpenAI GPT integration), finance projection endpoint.
Database: In-memory for demo; scalable to MongoDB/Firebase.
Hosting: Local development (deployable to Netlify or Heroku).
Version control: GitHub repository to track code and allow portfolio submission.
Challenges we ran into
Time constraint: Building a full AI-integrated system in 24 hours meant some features were mocked rather than fully connected to live APIs.
Balancing simplicity with functionality: We wanted to make the platform beginner-friendly while including enough features to showcase real-world usefulness.
Frontend-backend integration: Ensuring the dynamic updates for resume analysis, finance, and team goals worked smoothly without a framework like React initially.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Created a fully functional MVP demo in under 24 hours with three key modules: resume analysis, finance tracker, and team goal hub.
Developed a clear, professional submission-ready project suitable for a GitHub portfolio.
Designed a platform that demonstrates real-world relevance, combining career readiness, financial literacy, and collaboration in one tool.
What we learned
How to structure a full-stack web project quickly and efficiently.
Key concepts in career readiness technology, including skill assessment, progress tracking, and budgeting analytics.
How to mock AI endpoints for rapid prototyping while maintaining a demo-ready product.
The importance of user experience, even in early-stage MVPs, to make the platform intuitive and engaging.
What's next for CareerCompass-AI
Integrate real AI-powered resume analysis (OpenAI GPT or similar).
Connect to live finance APIs like Plaid for actual budget tracking.
Build a React frontend for a more modern, responsive user interface.
Add persistent database storage for team goals and user profiles.
Explore mobile-friendly deployment and optional gamification features to increase engagement.
