Inspiration

As a mid-career professional myself, I watched peers (and felt it too) hit plateaus—stuck in roles, unsure how to pivot, and blind to market trends. I wanted to build something that didn’t just give generic advice, but personalized, real-time guidance rooted in actual job market data. CareerCoach AI was born from that frustration: a tool that meets professionals where they are, not where the industry thinks they should be.

What it does

CareerCoach AI is an all-in-one platform for 28-45 year olds seeking career advancement. It starts with a 5-step assessment to build a career profile, then delivers tailored market analysis (salary benchmarks, in-demand skills), personalized learning paths, AI-driven resume/cover letter tools, and interview simulation with instant feedback—all for a $39/month subscription (7-day free trial).

How we built it

We started with core user research (interviewing 50+ mid-career professionals) to map pain points. Tech stack: Python/Node.js for backend logic, React for frontend, AWS for hosting, PostgreSQL for user/market data. We integrated third-party APIs (OpenAI, learning platforms, Stripe) to avoid building everything from scratch, and used Chart.js to turn raw data into visual skill radars/salary comparisons. The onboarding flow was iterated 8 times to keep it intuitive but thorough.

Challenges we ran into

The biggest hurdle was sourcing real-time, accurate market data across industries/geographies—we had to partner with job market aggregators and clean messy datasets for reliable salary benchmarks. We also struggled with balancing personalization (too many options = overwhelm) and simplicity (too few = generic). Testing the AI interview simulator with video was buggy initially; we added a text fallback to keep usability high.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We built a platform that’s not just functional, but usable—beta users completed the 5-step assessment 2x faster than our first prototype, and 80% said the learning paths directly addressed their skill gaps. Seeing a user land a 30% higher-paying role using our resume builder and interview prep? That’s the win that makes the late nights worth it.

What we learned

User research isn’t a one-and-done—it’s ongoing. We thought we knew pain points, but early testers highlighted how critical geographic salary comparisons were (a detail we’d overlooked). We also learned to prioritize core features over "nice-to-haves": the free trial with limited access kept users engaged without overwhelming them, and the annual subscription discount boosted retention by 40%.

What's next for this project

First, expand market data to more European countries (currently strong in the US/UK, but we’re adding Germany/France). We’re also testing 1:1 AI coaching check-ins (weekly personalized insights) and integrating LinkedIn profile optimization. Long-term, we want to add executive-level career paths for users aiming for C-suite roles—filling the gap between mid-career and executive support.
