🌍 Where does it start? We're international students ourselves, and we watched friends struggle to translate real, hard-won experience into something a U.S. hiring manager or applicant-tracking system would even recognize. This isn't a small problem. It disproportionately affects Asian immigrants and internationally trained professionals across engineering, healthcare, and business, whose degrees and titles don't map cleanly onto American norms. A brilliant engineer from Mumbai or a nurse from Manila can have their resume auto-rejected simply because it wasn't written in the "right" format or language.
We built Career Passport because we didn't want another person's qualifications to get lost in translation - literally. ✈️
🛂 What does Career Passport do? -> Translates uploaded resumes into a structured U.S.-style format -> Translates multilingual resumes into English -> Follows a consistent template of Education, Experience, and Leadership & Activities -> Compares the resume with a specific job posting -> Shows resume-to-job similarity and estimated acceptance likelihood -> Identifies matching and missing keywords -> Explains what's working, what's unclear, and how to improve it -> Provides role-specific career resources and guidance
🛠️ Techstack Next.js, React, TypeScript, CSS. Gemini processes uploaded resumes and job descriptions, extracts relevant information, creates a structured resume, and provides comparison feedback.
🧩 Challenges we ran into
- Handling inconsistent AI responses when Gemini sometimes returned education data as an object instead of text, or wrapped JSON inside Markdown formatting. We added normalization and resilient JSON parsing to handle both cases.
- Career Passport never invents employers, credentials, achievements, or skills. Our prompts and fallback logic were designed to preserve uncertainty and use only the information the user actually provided.
- Comparing resumes with external job postings, since some job sites block automated requests or return incomplete page content so we built explicit detection and honest messaging for when that happens, instead of failing silently.
🏆 We're proud that Career Passport provides more than just a generated resume. It explains why something matches a job, what's missing, why the gap matters, and how the user can correct it so turning a black-box score into something people can actually act on.
📚 We learned that -> AI-generated output is useful when it's explainable and grounded in the user's original documents. -> People also need to understand the reasoning behind the recommendations they're given. -> Importance of defensive handling around AI APIs: retries, response validation, fallback drafts, and careful protection against invented information.
🚀 What's next for Career Passport Personalized learning and certification recommendations, so users don't just see a skill gap, they see recources, they see next step.
