Inspiration

Inspired by my own journey in trying to change careers as well as those of my friends who feel stuck in their current fields and don't know how/where to go next.

What it does

It takes your current resume, skills and certs and combines them with what you like and want to do, the job field you want to be in, and what you DON'T want to do to provide idea of jobs you could pursue. Ask the career coach more about each job, then use the "what's next" area to figure out what you are missing and find the resource to help you fill any gaps. Also engage in a mock interview about your chosen job to see how you feel and where you have gaps.

How I built it

I started with a basic resume crawler, one that takes your pasted resume and distills your skills and certs into a clean, easy to read list. I built a second app focused on using your skills to find jobs you might already be qualified for. I refined these, then combined them and expanded to create a fully functional, all-in-one all to help guide someone through a career change or finding a career path.

Challenges we ran into

A big challenge was around negating items. I wanted to be able to say "i don't want this kind of job" or "i don't like this kind of work". It took some tweaking to make this work how I wanted, but with some trial and error I was able to build and use a text input where the user could add the items they don't want or like and have that taken into account.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

In having people test this, a close friend who is looking to change careers used the app and said that in doing so, the app listed some jobs they had considered but previously written off as not attainable. They said the fact that the app offered those jobs as options base on their existing skills made them decide to look at those options again as possible, achievable goals.

I was also very proud of getting the "dislikes" section working the way I wanted.

What we learned

I learned a fair amount about building basic prompt-based apps. I actually learned the most with my "dislikes" section, because I learned the ways the models not only took the user input but also factored in how I wrote my own prompts for each app widget in how it handled everything.
