π Career GPS β AI-Powered Career Mentor
Inspiration
As students, we are constantly surrounded by career advice, but most of it is generic. Terms like AI Engineer, Backend Developer, Cloud Engineer, and Cybersecurity Analyst are everywhere, yet many students don't truly understand what these careers involve or which path matches their interests and skills.
I wanted to build a tool that acts like a personal career mentorβone that understands a student's profile and provides personalized guidance instead of one-size-fits-all recommendations.
The Problem
Students often struggle with questions like:
- Which tech career is right for me?
- What skills should I learn next?
- Which projects should I build?
- How do I move from where I am today to my dream career?
Most online career advice is either too broad or requires hours of research across multiple websites.
Our Solution
Career GPS is an AI-powered career guidance platform that analyzes a student's:
- Current academic year
- Existing technical skills
- Interests
- Career goals
Using Gemini AI, the application generates:
- π― Top career matches
- π‘ Simple explanations of each career
- π Skill gap analysis
- π Personalized learning roadmap
- π Project recommendations
- π Free learning resources
- β Actionable career advice
Instead of overwhelming students with information, Career GPS creates a personalized roadmap they can start following immediately.
How We Built It
The project was built using:
- Python
- Streamlit for the user interface
- Google Gemini API for AI-powered recommendations
- Prompt Engineering to generate structured and personalized responses
- Git & GitHub for version control
The application collects user inputs through an interactive interface, constructs a carefully designed prompt, sends it to Gemini, and displays the generated career roadmap in an easy-to-read format.
Challenges We Faced
During development, we encountered several challenges:
- Learning how to integrate an AI model into a real application.
- Managing Streamlit's session state and user interactions.
- Designing prompts that produced concise, structured, and useful responses instead of long paragraphs.
- Improving the user experience by organizing AI-generated information into a readable format.
Each challenge helped us better understand AI application development and iterative product design.
What We Learned
This project taught us much more than how to call an AI API.
We learned:
- How to build an end-to-end AI application.
- The importance of prompt engineering in improving AI output.
- How frontend, backend, and AI work together to create a complete product.
- How small improvements in UI and UX can significantly enhance the user experience.
- How to transform an idea into a functional prototype suitable for real users.
Future Improvements
Career GPS has the potential to become a complete AI career platform. Planned features include:
- π Resume analysis
- π€ AI-powered interview preparation
- π Skill progress tracking
- π€ User accounts and saved roadmaps
- π₯ Personalized course and video recommendations
- π€ Community mentorship and peer learning
Impact
Career GPS aims to reduce the confusion many students face while choosing a career in technology. By providing personalized, practical, and AI-driven guidance, it helps students make informed decisions and take meaningful steps toward achieving their goals.
