Inspiration
During the TAMU Engineering Career Fair, we wanted to be educated on the companies that would hire us. Before and after speaking to a company we would have to go find somewhere to sit and start researching the next company. This took away from precious career fair time. We knew there has to be a better way.
What it does
Our platform acts as a digital bridge between the Career Fair directory and the candidate's resume. By web-scraping real-time fair data and analyzing student profiles, we provide hyper-personalized matching and contextual relevance. Ranking companies with the best fit score and providing key talking points.
How we built it
We split the workload by frontend, web scraper, resume reader, and connecting it all. We first started off with writing a program to read resumes and categorize all data as well as a web scraper to gather data on companies. Then we worked on a front end as well as handing feeding the company and student data to Gemini through an API. Finally we connected it all using flask.
Challenges we ran into
The biggest challenge was integrating our backend web scraper and python Gemini API backend into the frontend. Incorporating these 3 functionalities together was quite ambiguous and we frequently ran into problems which required a lot of troubleshooting. To resolve these issues, we utilized flask that ran a live server connecting the backend web scraper and Gemini requests triggered by interactions on the frontend.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Learning how to use Gemini API, building a web scraper, and using flask to connect the backend to the frontend.
What we learned
How to utilize APIs, scrape websites, read resumes automatically, and connect it all with the backend.
What's next for Career Compass
We would like to expand to be able to cover any career fairs in America, reduce run time, and create a mobile version with UI which users can easily pass in their resumes and the career fair information.
