Inspiration

Students often struggle to connect their coursework to real career paths. We wanted to create a bridge between education and employment — helping students see how their skills translate into real opportunities.

What it does

Career Compass lets students discover internships that match their skills or completed courses — and explore which courses to take to reach a desired job. It empowers informed career decisions through skill-based matching.

How we built it

We built a web app using a skill-matching engine that maps student profiles (skills + courses) to internship requirements. The backend stores course–skill relationships and internship data, while the frontend provides intuitive search and recommendation tools.

Challenges we ran into

Normalizing skill data across different schools and majors

Designing accurate matching algorithms for diverse fields

Integrating varied course catalog formats

Balancing simplicity with personalization in the user interface

Accomplishments that we're proud of

Created a functional prototype that connects learning paths to internships

Built a recommendation system linking job requirements to courses

Partnered with test schools for real-world feedback

What we learned

We learned the importance of consistent skill taxonomies and how powerful personalized recommendations can be for students’ confidence and career direction.

What's next for Career Compass

We plan to integrate AI-driven skill assessment, add partnerships with employers, and expand to universities nationwide — making Career Compass the go-to hub for students to navigate from learning to earning.
