Career Compass Inspiration As a first-year IT student, I noticed that my friends and I were struggling to choose the right career path, whether it was Web Development, Data Science, AI/ML, Cybersecurity, or DevOps. Many of us were just following trends or listening to advice without truly understanding our own strengths or interests. I wanted to build a tool that could help students, new graduates, and even non-tech professionals explore the IT world with more confidence. This is how Career Compass was born: a personalized learning platform that suggests IT domains based on quiz results, provides clear roadmaps, and motivates users by tracking their progress.

What it does Career Compass is designed to be a guide for anyone looking to start their journey in tech. It includes several key features:

Quiz Dashboard: Users can take quizzes for different domains, with their scores being saved and visualized to help them understand their interests.

Roadmaps: Each domain has a structured learning path, broken down into different phases with specific skills and resources.

Progress Tracker: The platform provides visual feedback on completed skills and learning streaks to keep users motivated.

Recommendations: Based on quiz scores and a user's interests, the platform offers personalized recommendations for domains to explore.

Career Paths Tab: This section shows a list of possible careers for each domain, helping users see where their learning could lead.

How we built it The project's frontend was built using React with Vite for a fast development experience. For the user interface, we relied on Tailwind CSS and ShadCN UI components, which allowed us to create a clean and modern design. We also integrated Lucide React Icons for visuals and used Framer Motion to add smooth animations and make the user experience more engaging.

For the backend, which is still a work in progress, we plan to use Django with the Django REST Framework. MongoDB will store quiz scores and user profiles. We are also planning to integrate a local LLM to generate domain-specific resources on the fly.

Challenges we ran into One of the biggest challenges was designing a data structure that could handle all the information for the roadmaps, including skills and resources, in a way that was both scalable and easy to manage. We also faced some hurdles integrating different libraries like ShadCN and Framer Motion to work together seamlessly without conflicts. Finally, planning the architecture for the backend while simultaneously building the frontend required careful coordination to ensure everything would connect properly in the future.

Accomplishments that we're proud of We are most proud of successfully creating a functional quiz logic and a dynamic recommendation system based on the results. Seeing the progress tracker and roadmaps come to life was a huge accomplishment, as these are the core features of the platform. We are also proud of the clean and responsive UI we were able to build using modern frontend tools, which makes the app feel polished and professional.

What we learned This project taught us a tremendous amount. We learned how to build a complex, scalable React application and gained hands-on experience with modern frontend tools like Tailwind CSS and ShadCN. We also learned how to implement a user-centric quiz and scoring system and even got a basic understanding of how ML algorithms could be used to generate suggestions. Beyond the technical skills, we learned a lot about structuring a large-scale project and planning for future features.

What's next for Career Compass Our next steps are focused on completing the backend. We're excited to implement the Django and MongoDB setup to handle user profiles and data. The main goal is to integrate a local LLM to dynamically generate and provide high-quality learning resources for each domain. We also want to expand the content with more quizzes, a wider range of domains, and a more comprehensive career paths section.
