Quiana Berry was the product lead and primary visionary behind Career Compass.

Prior to the hackathon, Quiana conducted several weeks of user research through the Afro Adventurer community, a global network of over 1,400 professionals across the diaspora and Global South (AfroAdventurers.com). Through community discussions, polls, and feedback sessions with more than 100+ respondents (Job seekers and recruiters), a clear pattern emerged: despite the growing number of AI-powered career tools available in 2026, professionals still struggled with identifying legitimate opportunities, avoiding scams, navigating AI-driven hiring systems, and accessing referral networks.

Based on these findings, Quiana defined the product strategy, core problem statement, user flows, feature prioritization, and overall vision for Career Compass.

During the hackathon, she served as Chief Product Lead and helped design the end-to-end user experience, including:

One aspect the team is particularly proud of is that their project was genuinely built during the hackathon. We did not arrive with a pre-built product. The concept, architecture, workflows, and prototype were developed within the event timeframe based on research and insights gathered beforehand.

As Founder of Afro Adventurer, Quiana's long-term mission is to build tools that increase workforce mobility, economic opportunity, and global access for diaspora and Global South talent. Career Compass represents an early step toward that vision.

Quiana and Sam also intentionally archited the build and UX around the Google ecosystem, leveraging Gemini throughout the project—from ideation and content generation to AI-powered decision intelligence, infrastructure planning, and user experience design—to demonstrate how Gemini can serve as the core reasoning layer of a real-world workforce mobility platform.

Sam served as the AI and Technical Lead for Career Compass, transforming the product vision into a functional prototype within the hackathon timeframe.

Drawing on his AI and engineering background, Sam architected and implemented the core technical foundation of the platform, including the integration of Google Gemini-powered workflows, application logic, and system functionality. He was responsible for bringing the product concepts to life, translating user requirements and product strategy into working features that could be demonstrated live.

His contributions included:

Working closely with product and design, Sam helped ensure that the platform's core vision—using Gemini to help job seekers identify legitimate opportunities, prioritize applications, and navigate an increasingly complex hiring landscape—could be effectively realized and showcased during the competition.

Post-Hackathon Update: Early Validation for Career Compass after presenting at Build54 Nairobi Hack

One of the most rewarding parts of building Career Compass wasn't the demo itself—it was the conversations that happened afterward.

Throughout the hackathon, attendees, builders, and community members approached our team to share their experiences and feedback. Many told us they could immediately see themselves using a tool like Career Compass in their own job search journey. Others pointed out potential applications for recruiters, hiring teams, and organizations looking to improve trust and efficiency in hiring.

Several people shared personal stories about:

Nearly falling victim to fake job postings and employment scams
Feeling overwhelmed by the volume of opportunities online
Struggling to determine which roles were legitimate
Experiencing burnout during extended job searches
Navigating the emotional and mental-health challenges that often accompany unemployment or career transitions

These conversations reinforced what our research had already shown: this is a real problem affecting real people.

Prior to the hackathon, Career Compass was informed by weeks of user research conducted through the Afro Adventurer community, with feedback gathered from more than 100 professionals across the diaspora and Global South. The hackathon provided an opportunity to validate those findings in person.

The response confirmed several key assumptions:

✅ Users want guidance on where to focus their time rather than applying everywhere.

✅ Referral access remains a major challenge.

✅ Career coaching and emotional support are increasingly important in an AI-driven labor market.

✅ Employers and recruiters may also benefit from improved opportunity intelligence and matching systems.

As a two-person team, we are especially proud that Career Compass was conceived, designed, and built within the hackathon timeframe using Google Gemini and Google Cloud technologies as core components of the platform.

We also received positive feedback on the clarity of our presentation, product vision, and ability to answer questions during judging and community discussions. Beyond formal evaluation, community conversations, video testimonials, audience reactions, and post-demo feedback provided valuable validation that the problem resonates strongly with users.

For us, the most important outcome wasn't a placement on a leaderboard—it was confirming that the challenge we're solving is real, urgent, and worth continuing to build.
