Post-Hackathon Update: Early Validation for Career Compass after presenting at Build54 Nairobi Hack

One of the most rewarding parts of building Career Compass wasn't the demo itself—it was the conversations that happened afterward.

Throughout the hackathon, attendees, builders, and community members approached our team to share their experiences and feedback. Many told us they could immediately see themselves using a tool like Career Compass in their own job search journey. Others pointed out potential applications for recruiters, hiring teams, and organizations looking to improve trust and efficiency in hiring.

Several people shared personal stories about:

  • Nearly falling victim to fake job postings and employment scams
  • Feeling overwhelmed by the volume of opportunities online
  • Struggling to determine which roles were legitimate
  • Experiencing burnout during extended job searches
  • Navigating the emotional and mental-health challenges that often accompany unemployment or career transitions

These conversations reinforced what our research had already shown: this is a real problem affecting real people.

Prior to the hackathon, Career Compass was informed by weeks of user research conducted through the Afro Adventurer community, with feedback gathered from more than 100 professionals across the diaspora and Global South. The hackathon provided an opportunity to validate those findings in person.

The response confirmed several key assumptions:

✅ Job seekers want legitimacy and trust signals before applying.

✅ Users want guidance on where to focus their time rather than applying everywhere.

✅ Referral access remains a major challenge.

✅ Career coaching and emotional support are increasingly important in an AI-driven labor market.

✅ Employers and recruiters may also benefit from improved opportunity intelligence and matching systems.

As a two-person team, we are especially proud that Career Compass was conceived, designed, and built within the hackathon timeframe using Google Gemini and Google Cloud technologies as core components of the platform.

We also received positive feedback on the clarity of our presentation, product vision, and ability to answer questions during judging and community discussions. Beyond formal evaluation, community conversations, video testimonials, audience reactions, and post-demo feedback provided valuable validation that the problem resonates strongly with users.

For us, the most important outcome wasn't a placement on a leaderboard—it was confirming that the challenge we're solving is real, urgent, and worth continuing to build.
