Inspiration

Caregiving is built on love, but day-to-day it can become stressful, rushed, and full of misunderstandings—especially when the care recipient’s needs change over time. We wanted to create something that helps caregivers and care recipients stay aligned, communicate with dignity, and preserve the relationship (not just “complete tasks”).

What it does

CareConnect improves the caregiver–care recipient relationship by turning care into a shared, respectful collaboration.

How we built it

We started by mapping common friction points (loss of autonomy, unclear expectations, caregiver burnout, communication breakdowns). We translated those into simple flows: “express preferences → confirm understanding → act → reflect.” The app is structured around two roles (caregiver and care recipient) with a shared space to avoid “talking about” someone instead of “with” them. We prioritized accessibility (large text, minimal steps, calm UI) so it’s usable even in stressful moments.

Challenges we ran into

  • Designing for dignity: we had to avoid making the care recipient feel “managed” by the app.
  • Two-user experience: balancing caregiver efficiency with recipient autonomy without adding friction.
  • Emotional edge cases: tense moments need support fast, but without sounding robotic or preachy.
  • Keeping it lightweight: caregiving is already a lot—logging can’t feel like extra homework.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

  • Built a flow that centers the care recipient’s voice and reduces misunderstandings.
  • Made communication easier with ready-to-use prompts that encourage consent and respect.
  • Created a simple way to track and reinforce positive relationship moments, not only problems.
  • Kept the experience fast and accessible, so it works in real life.

What we learned

  • Relationship quality improves when care is treated as a shared agreement, not a checklist.
  • Small “micro-choices” (asking preferences, confirming comfort) can prevent bigger conflicts.
  • Caregivers need help too: support for empathy and clarity reduces burnout and guilt.
  • The best features are the ones that work in under 10 seconds during a busy day.

What's next for CareConnect

  • Personalization & insights: patterns like “mornings are harder” + suggested routines and check-in timing.
  • Multi-caregiver support: shared updates across family members or rotating caregivers.
  • Voice-first check-ins: for users who struggle with typing or have low mobility.
  • Clinician/community resources: optional guidance from trusted caregiving organizations.
  • Stronger safety boundaries: escalation options for repeated distress, burnout, or care confusion (with privacy-first design).
