CareCircle: Voice-First Medicine Guardian

Inspiration

Many elderly people sometimes forget to take their medicines, especially when they live alone or their family members live far away. A missed medicine reminder can create worry for both the elderly person and their caregivers.

We built CareCircle to demonstrate how voice-based technology can make daily medication routines easier and help families stay informed when a reminder goes unanswered. Our goal is to create a simple, accessible experience that supports elderly people in their everyday lives.

What It Does

CareCircle is a medicine reminder and caregiver notification prototype featuring a simulated Alexa+ experience, a web dashboard, and Telegram alerts.

Key features include:

  • Voice-first reminders: Simulates spoken medicine reminders and lets users confirm whether they have taken their medication.
  • Three-language support: Demonstrates reminder flows in English, Hindi, and Marathi.
  • Caregiver notifications: Sends a Telegram alert when a reminder remains unanswered after a configurable grace period.
  • Medication dashboard: Displays upcoming reminders, medication status, and recent medication activity.
  • MCP integration: Uses a self-hosted Model Context Protocol (MCP) server with five tools exposed over Streamable HTTP.
  • Conditional alerts: Demonstrates the difference between a confirmed medication reminder and an unanswered reminder that needs caregiver attention.

How We Built It

We developed CareCircle by combining a web-based dashboard, a simulated Alexa+ interaction experience, a self-hosted MCP server, and Telegram notifications.

The dashboard provides a central place to view medication reminders and their status. The reminder simulator demonstrates how an elderly user can respond to a reminder. When a reminder is confirmed, the dashboard updates to show the completed status. If the reminder remains unanswered beyond the configured grace period, the system demonstrates how a caregiver can be notified through Telegram.

We designed the experience to support English, Hindi, and Marathi so that users can interact in a language they are comfortable with.

The MCP server provides a structured interface through five tools over Streamable HTTP, demonstrating how an assistant-style experience can interact with application functionality.

Important: The Alexa+ experience shown in this project is a simulation, not an official Alexa+ integration.

Challenges We Faced

One of the main challenges was designing a reminder workflow that distinguishes between a confirmed response and an unanswered reminder. Sending an alert immediately could create unnecessary notifications, while waiting too long could delay a caregiver's awareness.

We addressed this in the prototype with a configurable grace period before a caregiver alert is triggered.

Another challenge was demonstrating the same reminder workflow across three languages while keeping the dashboard, reminder status, and Telegram notification flow consistent. Integrating the MCP server with the application workflow was also an important part of making the demonstration understandable and structured.

What We Learned

Building CareCircle helped us understand how the Model Context Protocol can connect an assistant-style experience with application tools. We also learned about designing event-driven workflows, handling reminder confirmations, integrating Telegram notifications, and presenting application state through a dashboard.

Most importantly, we learned that useful healthcare technology is not only about sending reminders. It is also about making interactions accessible and helping caregivers know when additional attention may be needed.

What's Next

Future improvements could include integration with a real supported voice-assistant platform, secure user accounts, persistent medication schedules, caregiver permissions, improved accessibility, and more robust notification handling.

We would also like to test the experience with users and caregivers to understand how the reminder flow can be made more reliable and easier to use.

Conclusion

CareCircle demonstrates how multilingual voice-first reminders, an MCP server, a medication dashboard, and conditional Telegram alerts can work together in a single prototype.

Our vision is simple: help people remember their medicines and help families stay connected through thoughtful technology.

CareCircle is a prototype for demonstrating medication reminders and caregiver notifications. It is not a substitute for professional medical advice or supervision.
