CareCall is a fully autonomous voice agent that takes real-world action when seniors speak. No buttons. No apps. Just natural conversation that triggers life-saving Function Calls.

What it does

CareCall is a voice-first autonomous agent built specifically for elderly people living alone. It uses Deepgram's Voice Agent API with Function Calling to trigger real-world actions from voice commands.

Challenges we ran into

1. FUNCTION CALLING RELIABILITY

  • Challenge: Elderly users need 100% reliability - missed emergency alerts are unacceptable
  • Solution: Multi-level confirmation for critical actions, retry logic with exponential backoff, fallback notifications if primary Function Call fails. "Help I fell" → Try SMS → Try call → Try email → Success guaranteed

2. NATURAL LANGUAGE UNDERSTANDING

  • Challenge: Elderly users don't speak in "computer language"
  • Solution: Train on elderly speech patterns, context awareness ("Call her" knows "her" = most recent contact), fuzzy matching ("blood pressure medicine" = "BP pill" = "that heart one")

3. FALSE POSITIVE PREVENTION

  • Challenge: Can't send emergency alerts for TV show saying "Help, I've fallen!"
  • Solution: Confidence scoring (only trigger emergency at >85% confidence), confirmation prompts ("Did you say you need help?"), learning system that improves accuracy over time

4. BUILDING TRUST WITH ELDERLY USERS

  • Challenge: "I don't trust computers with my safety"
  • Solution: Always-visible feedback (waveforms show it's listening), verbal confirmations ("I've alerted your daughter Sarah"), multi-sensory cues (sound + visual + voice), transparent actions ("I'm calling 911 now")

What we learned

1. FUNCTION CALLING IS THE KILLER FEATURE: Voice recognition is impressive, but Function Calling is what makes it USEFUL. "I fell" is just text → sendEmergencyAlert() saves a life.

2. AUTONOMOUS AGENTS NEED TRUST: Elderly users won't trust black-box systems. Every Function Call needs visible confirmation, verbal feedback, multi-sensory cues, and transparent actions.

3. DEEPGRAM VOICE AGENT API IS GAME-CHANGING: What would take months (building speech recognition, NLU, intent classification) takes hours with Deepgram. Function Calling makes complex workflows simple.

4. REAL-WORLD IMPACT > TECHNICAL COMPLEXITY: The most impressive projects solve real problems. CareCall isn't fancy ML - it's Voice Operator doing what it does best: Listen → Understand → Act → Save lives.
