Inspiration
The United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 3.2 sets a clear, urgent target: by 2030, end preventable deaths of newborns and children under 5 years of age. Despite advances in modern medicine, a massive gap remains between a mother's intuition at home and the clinical care waiting at the hospital. Too often, by the time a child is brought in for care, it is too late. We were inspired to build CareBridge to digitize survival—creating a direct, real-time lifeline between families and healthcare providers to ensure early intervention and proactive care.
What it does
CareBridge is a dual-sided digital health platform that connects the home to the clinic. It operates through two integrated interfaces: The Family Portal (Maa & Shishu): A user-friendly app for mothers and families to register their children, track their health journey from ages 0-5, and proactively "lodge risks" the moment they observe warning signs (like high fever or lethargy). The Healthcare Provider Dashboard: A clinical interface where doctors and health workers receive real-time alerts from families as "New Cases." Providers can monitor child profiles, manage follow-ups, and issue emergency referrals to specialists.
By bridging these two worlds, CareBridge turns reactive emergency room visits into proactive, preventative healthcare.
How we built it
We built CareBridge using a modern web stack designed for responsiveness and accessibility. Frontend: We utilized React.js along with React Router to create a seamless, single-page application experience. We developed two separate, distinct UI flows—one tailored for mothers (Family Portal) and one designed for clinical efficiency (Healthcare Dashboard). Styling & UI: We used Tailwind CSS / Vanilla CSS (with Lucide-react icons) to ensure the platform is intuitive, warm, and easy to navigate on mobile devices, which is critical for accessibility in rural or underserved areas. Architecture: The component-based architecture allows for scalable features, utilizing a shared backend logic to sync risk logs from families directly into the provider's active case queue.
Challenges we ran into
One of the biggest challenges was designing a User Interface that works for two entirely different demographics. We had to ensure the Family Portal was incredibly simple, empathetic, and intuitive for mothers who might not be highly tech-savvy. Conversely, the Provider Dashboard needed to be data-rich, efficient, and capable of displaying urgent triage information clearly so doctors could make rapid decisions. Balancing these two design languages within the same ecosystem required careful planning and multiple iterations.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We are incredibly proud of successfully establishing the core "Risk Lodging" loop. Seeing a risk submitted on the Family Portal immediately populate as an actionable case on the Provider Dashboard was a massive win. We are also proud of the clean, accessible UI that respects the gravity of the subject matter while remaining hopeful and supportive.
What we learned
We learned a lot about the specific metrics and targets of SDG 3, specifically regarding neonatal and under-5 mortality rates. From a technical standpoint, we deepened our understanding of state management across different user roles and how to architect a dual-sided platform where data must flow instantly between two distinct user groups to be effective.
What's next for CareBridge
To truly achieve the goal of zero preventable deaths, our next steps for CareBridge include: Multilingual Support: Adding local language options to ensure accessibility for mothers in rural and diverse communities. AI Triage Assistant: Implementing a lightweight AI to help categorize the severity of the risks lodged by parents before they reach the doctor. SMS Integration: Allowing offline risk lodging via SMS for families without stable internet access. Immunization Tracking: Automated push notifications and scheduling for critical vaccines during the first five years.
