Inspiration

According to the American Psychological Association, about two-thirds of caregivers report adverse mental and behavioral health symptoms. After talking to Axxess representatives, we learned that caregivers in the realm of homecare do not receive sufficient care for their mental well-being. Caregivers, specifically those involved in home care, often suffer from burnout due to the demanding nature of their responsibilities.

What it does

Care4Carers is a mobile application that allows caregivers to receive optimal care, ultimately aiding in burnout management and prevention. It gathers information from each caregiver via a questionnaire and gives personalized suggestions based on the caregiver's responses. Caregivers are able to interact with other caregivers near them via a chatroom, as well as videocall with an available counselor or therapist in their vicinity.

How we built it

We used Figma to create the prototype for our application. We used Next.js to develop a website and helped create a portable build for this website using Capacitor, an open source project that creates a web native app from a Next.js project. We used MongoDB to store the caregiver's information to host questionnaire data and enable the use of chat groups to personalize suggestions and create communities.

Challenges we ran into

The biggest challenge we encountered was our collective lack of expertise in mobile development. We overcame this through various sources, utilizing our skills to create a prototype though Figma, and finding tutorials and other help to make a functioning product for Next.js, Tailwind CSS, and MongoDB.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We are proud of going outside our comfort zone to create a mobile app. It is also the first hackathon for most of the people in our team, so we are proud of our involvement in tackling this challenge.

What we learned

We learned mobile app development, specifically Figma and Next.js. We also learned how to use MongoDB and Capacitor.

What's next for Care4Carers

We hope to fully build the app and integrate telehealth services by adding more resources and building a supportive community for caregivers.
