The aging population is on the rise. The pressure in the healthcare sector is rising too, due to the growing number of older people that needs care. A well known complaint from Healthcare are the declining levels of personality, because there is less time made available for elderly. This while older people already spend a large amount of their time in loneliness. We think we found a problem that has not been resolved by the multinationals in this world yet. This means there is an opportunity for us as a team at the Pennapps Hackathon.

What it does

Our solution is a platform in which older people, families and caregiver are able to communicate with the aim to be able to better provide for their needs & wants of the elderly. The platform is divided into three devices (for now); Mac, iPad and iPhone.

The elderly receive a loan tablet at Care house which is has a fixed interface. This interface is simplified so that older people can understand them well. The elderly have the ability to make their needs known to carers and family via the tablet. Care ensures that there is always a suitable caregiver nearby.

The caregivers are screened by Care and can register themselves in their region on our platform via Mac or the web application. Since elderly people prefer to see the same caregiver for a specific job we always try to match the same person to an individual.

Family members do not always have the time to care for their own families. Yet they can stay on top of the caretaker by our iPhone application. You can videocall your elderly as well.

How I built it

We started with raw sketching and brainstorming about the concept. After the brainstorming phase and forming a concept the designers started to design in Sketch. The developers started with setting up the back-end. There are two web versions / one page applications of our platform. These are built with the help of react js, because it helps with speed of our page. Additionally Webpack & Gulp were used to use Babel. The iOS app is built into Xcode with objective-c.

Challenges I ran into

The biggest challenge was the concept and the iPad application. Because we focus specifically on the elderly, it is important to keep the interface extremely simple. Also determining the functionality was very important because we wanted more than we could actually achieve.

Accomplishments that I'm proud of

We’re really proud of the work we did within 36 hours. We designed and built three applications in such a short time. This is partly because we all worked so hard. We are also pleased that we were able to work with new techniques, including reactjs.

What's next for Care.

With this concept we want to start a society where older people have more influence on their healtcare on the right time, care on demand.
