Inspiration

Care India was inspired by a planning problem: important healthcare decisions often depend on fragmented, messy facility data that is difficult to explore, compare, and trust. We wanted to make that data usable for non-technical planners by turning it into a clear geographic and evidence-driven workflow.

What it does

Care India helps planners identify possible care gaps across India by mapping facilities and analyzing them through standardized capability lenses. A planner can select a capability, choose a state, drill down into a city, and review risk scores, confidence scores, and the facility evidence behind them. The app also supports planner notes, shortlists, review decisions, and a chat interface for asking questions about the current geography and risk view.

How we built it

We built Care India as a Databricks app backed by facility data with latitude, longitude, specialties, equipment, and geography fields. We standardized noisy capability values from specialties and equipment into more usable planning categories, then used those categories to power filters, mapping, and risk analysis. On the frontend, we designed an interface with a left-side workflow for scope selection, a central India map, and a right-side risk lens with tabs for overview, drivers, and evidence. We also added cited facility text, uncertainty messaging, and an LLM-backed planner chat experience to explain risk and evidence in plain language.

Challenges we ran into

The biggest challenge was data quality. Specialties, equipment, and geography fields were inconsistent and needed cleanup before they could support meaningful filtering or scoring. Another challenge was designing risk logic that was useful but honest: we needed to surface possible gaps without overstating certainty. We also spent a lot of time simplifying the user experience so a non-technical planner could move from a national map to an actionable local view without getting overwhelmed.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We are proud that Care India does more than visualize points on a map. It standardizes messy facility data, turns it into capability-based planning views, explains risk with evidence and uncertainty, and supports a realistic planner workflow. We are also proud that the app connects high-level risk summaries to the underlying facility records, so users can inspect the actual text behind important claims.

What we learned

We learned that usable health planning tools need more than analytics: they need transparency. A score is much more helpful when users can see what drives it, how confident the system is, and what evidence supports it. We also learned how critical data normalization is; without standardizing noisy source fields, even a strong UI or model can produce confusing results. Finally, we learned that interface design matters just as much as backend logic when building for decision-makers.

What's next for Care India.

Next, we want to make Care India more collaborative and proactive. That includes deeper planner workflows for scenarios, overrides, and shared reviews, stronger population and access benchmarks, and a more capable planner assistant that can answer follow-up questions, compare regions, and recommend next checks grounded in cited evidence. We also want to improve persistence and team collaboration so planning decisions can be tracked over time instead of treated as one-off exploration.
