Inspiration

Our team comprises of five medical students from leading medical schools in the UK. We are all deeply passionate about improving the quality of life of patients with long-term health conditions having come across this issue and speaking with people during our placements and clinical experiences.

When we interviewed our target market, patients with long-term conditions, we realised that when you live with a long-term health condition, you often improve your symptom management over time. This is learning from experience. However, this can take years to develop because of a lack of proper data collecting and symptom tracking.

What it does

Our app will raise awareness on the quality of life and standard of living for individuals suffering from their long-term health conditions and also allow patients to share tips and tricks on managing their condition and keeping positive. We will facilitate this via two ways. First, users are able to write a blog to keep track of their journey and progress and they may wish to share their blog to inspire others. Next, users are able to enter forums specifically tailored for their condition with verified doctors on-hand to provide clinical advice whilst other community members can provide tips and support for living with the condition. We aim to empower patients. Empower them to become beacons of hope for others.

Our app will also feature a premium, smart calendar. This calendar will not only allow patients to keep track of their symptoms and side effects to show to doctors, it will also allow for data analysis on pooled and individual data to better understand the duration of side effects of the overall condition alongside individual data from past episodes of that particular side effect. All of this will be combined to allow patients to better understand the characteristics of their particular side effect to accelerate the learning curve. We want to reduce the time take for patients to learn how to manage their symptoms through a combination of the forums and individual symptom tracker. The sooner patients learn symptom management, the better their quality of life.

How we built it

Figma prototype

Challenges we ran into

We couldn't code but we were determined to finish this product so we learnt Figma for designing and Canva for presentation

Accomplishments that we're proud of

Working together as a team to ensure everyone contributed and there was a psychologically safe environment during all decision-making.

What we learned

How to work as a team and manage our time and coordinate ourselves during the intense hackathon environment

What's next for Care Companion

In terms of next steps, we hope to develop a working MVP and start A/B testing with lead users to listen to their feedback and really understand what needs to be adjusted and changed to achieve our product-market fit and co-create with patients together, the first social media, symptom management app and community.
