There are multiple resources reporting confirmed cases, serious cases and deaths at a county level for the COVID 19 pandemic. However, we currently do not have a data-driven way to assess the available capacity and resources needed by the healthcare system when this pandemic reaches its peak.
Inadequate resource allocation places significant burden on the healthcare system in times of increased usage, such as with a pandemic. To assess this burden, a data-driven understanding of where the country’s most vulnerable populations live helps pandemic response teams better understand where to focus the allocation of essential resources. By looking at the population of those at most risk of developing severe complications, we can develop systems to support the planning and triage of resources to provide the most impact of scarce healthcare assets.
What it does
The Komodo Health CARE tool utilizes Komodo’s Healthcare Map to identify where patients who are most at risk of severe disease complications are located across the United States. Pandemic planners can then focus on particular areas where the risk of severe disease is high in order to plan for the appropriate allocation of resources to meet the needs of that population at various rates of disease spread.
How I built it
-Komodo’s Healthcare Map -Criteria (diagnosis or procedural billing codes) to define patient cohorts that are: -Symptomatic or diagnosed -At risk of severe disease complications -Rules for Risk Stratification -Publicly available sources for resource availability, population and current caseloads per county

What's next for CARE- Centralized Assessment for Risk Evolution
-Create a Planning Tool for Healthcare Organization(HCO) Resources -Model rates of spread by territory by fitting to a log-normal; allow tool end users to adjust fit parameters to hone in on expected rates of spread and see how it impacts resource utilization.
