Inspiration

The inspiration behind Card Wave came from the desire to support small businesses in Uganda, which often face significant financial barriers. Limited access to traditional banking services and high transaction fees make it difficult for these businesses to thrive. By leveraging blockchain technology and cryptocurrency like the Celo protocol, we saw an opportunity to provide an innovative solution that promotes financial inclusion and enhances customer engagement through gift cards.

What it does

Card Wave is a platform that enables small businesses in Uganda to create, manage, and redeem crypto gift cards. These gift cards can be purchased by customers and redeemed at participating businesses using the Mini Pay app on Opera Mini. The platform offers cash-back incentives to users, encouraging them to buy and redeem gift cards, thereby boosting sales for small businesses and promoting customer loyalty.

How we built it

We built Card Wave on the Celo network, chosen for its low transaction fees and mobile-first approach. The development process involved:

  • Blockchain Integration: Using Celo’s blockchain technology to ensure secure and transparent transactions.
  • User Interface: Designing a user-friendly interface for businesses to create and manage gift cards, and for customers to redeem them via Mini Pay.
  • Cash Back System: Created and deployed a smart contract on Alfajores testnet on the Celo network to implement a cashback incentive program to encourage usage.
  • Integrations: Seamlessly integrating with the Mini Pay app on Opera Mini to provide a smooth redemption process.

Challenges we ran into
