Inspiration
A variation of Uno called Multiverse Uno we made with similar concepts. We also decided to include deck builder elements from exploring a nodal map, based on games like Slay the Spire.
What it does
It is a game that involves clicking through a map to collect (or attempt to collect) unique cards for your deck, followed by playing a card game with those cards under Multiverse-Uno-like rules against an AI.
How we built it
We built the game with Gdevelop as a game engine and Github as a repository to collaborate. We spent some time brainstorming ideas before planning the concept and were very happy with it. It was then made in Gdevelop with art assets made in Medibang Paint.
Challenges we ran into
Github was very difficult to use and repeatedly erased work due to corruptions and merge conflicts, causing significant delays. Only one member of the team had experience in Gdevelop previously and another member had no game development experience at all, leading to difficulties in using the software and causing further delays. As such, while we now have a full idea and plan for the game, we were unable to get everything functioning in time and implement everything we wanted to.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
- Planning and designing a full game that on paper would be unique, fun and interesting.
- Working with unfamiliar engines and programmes like Github and still managing to learn them and produce something at the end of it
What we learned
How to use Github and experience with a game engine. We had to spend a lot of time working with Github to deal with repeated issues, so with practice should be able to better utilise it in the future.
What's next for Cardiverse
The game needs finishing, bug fixing and expanding to correctly implement everything we want the game to do, and have all of the stated ideas functioning correctly. More different map layouts need adding as well as more events, different cards, and more intelligent opponent AI.
