Inspiration
During our research, we found that while many assistive technologies exist for visually impaired individuals,**they are often expensive, limited to specific functions, or require dedicated hardware that many users cannot afford**. We wanted to _create a solution that is practical, affordable, and accessible by utilizing a device that most people already own: a smartphone_. This inspired us to develop an AI-powered wearable companion that enhances independence without imposing a high financial burden.
Inspirational Story
Imagine a visually impaired student walking to college for the first time. Every day, they rely on others to read signboards, identify classrooms, avoid unexpected obstacles, or guide them safely across busy pathways. We envisioned a companion that could replace this constant dependence with intelligent assistance, speaking naturally to the user, describing the surroundings, warning about hazards, and guiding them safely, thereby promoting confidence and independence in everyday life.
What Our Model Does
**AURA (Audio Understanding & Real-time Assistance)** is an AI-powered wearable mobility companion that connects to a smartphone and continuously assists visually impaired users. It understands the surrounding environment, detects obstacles, reads printed text, recognizes important objects, provides turn-by-turn navigation, responds to voice commands, and offers emergency assistance. Instead of simply identifying objects, it provides meaningful guidance through natural voice interactions, helping users make safer and more informed decisions.
How We Do It
The system consists of a lightweight wearable module equipped with sensors and connected wirelessly to a smartphone. The smartphone performs AI-based image analysis, object detection, OCR, navigation, and voice processing, while the wearable module provides obstacle sensing and quick-access controls. The processed information is delivered to the user through spoken audio and vibration alerts, creating a hands-free, voice-first experience that is both affordable and easy to use.
