Inspiration

The inspiration for Carbozzo came in the form of an Environmental Studies course being taught at our college. When I got to realize how much carbon emission we generate as individuals, I was left astonished. The only problem that would keep us from reducing our emissions is the fact that we do not realize how much impact our daily activities have on the environment.

Carbozzo is just a simple and creative initiative at making people reduce their carbon footprint, while being entertained and rewarded by the mascot, Ozzo. Its thrilling mini-game, Tetra Sustaina, entertains players, while educating them about themes like sustainability and eco-friendly choices.

What it does

Carbozzo is a gamified Android application that not only encourages users to optimize their carbon footprints by engaging in eco-friendly actions, but also lets them verify the completion of these actions in the real-life community. It gamifies the cumbersome process of reducing our carbon-footprints, and educates the users, while rewarding them for their planet-conscious lifestyle choices.

To further add to my challenge, I decided to code an arcade-style mini-game inside Carbozzo. Tetra Sustaina is your childhood favorite Tetris game, but with a twist, where it prompts you to answer 'Eco-queries' while managing the blocks. Eco-queries test your knowledge about sustainability and can either reward you with extra points to add to the scoreboard, or can punish you by making the game more difficult. Can you break your high scores in this twisted Tetris remake?

How we built it

While majoring in Electronics Engineering, coding was always fascinating for me. However, the complexities of app development stopped me from learning. But when I read about Flutter three years back, app development became a cakewalk for me. Fast forward to 2024, I have solely developed this beautiful app and mini-game, and am participating in this challenge.

Along with a cute, gamified frontend, I have also added the robust backend support of Google Firebase services to my app and mini-game.

Challenges we ran into

The most difficult part was taking this exciting coding journey ALL ALONE! It was scary when the app would crash on the backend, or when the game would puzzle me, or when I would have to manage my studies with the development and had to stay awake till 3 at nights :)

But yeah, the backend part was a huge challenge and frontend designing is my forte, so I had my lows and highs, but I would always find a way. Winning this challenge would be a big deal for me, keeping in mind my struggle, background and journey.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

Obviously, to finish this app and mini-game in time is a HUGE achievement for me. The amount of hard work I put into developing these babies is immeasurable. But I am proud of my work at the end, and am sure that you would fairly shortlist it for the next round.

What we learned

A lot! I learnt Flutter concepts that I assumed I was aware of. I learnt more about Google Firebase and everything around it. It was all a learning journey at the least.

What's next for Carbozzo: Tetra Sustaina

As I said before, if I get shortlisted in this challenge for the next round, it would mean the world to me. It would certainly encourage me to work harder and build a startup out of it for the community to benefit from.

Carbozzo and Tetra Sustaina have impressed my college and faculty to such extents that the patent process for my 9-weeks of hard work is already undergoing at our institute. I'm delighted to have been provided with such opportunity for my app development, thanks to Flutter and Global Citizen!
