Inspiration

According to the U.S. Energy Information Administration, greenhouse gases are the gases that keep heat in the earth’s atmosphere. Although these gases do occur naturally, still the human activities has contributed a lot in greenhouse gas emissions. It is very important for us to understand that the rise in carbon dioxide level because of human activities and energy consumption right from the time when industrial revolution started has now become the major cause behind overall warming of the planet that is having impacts around the globe. Using and wasting electricity, driving vehicles and industrial work are a few common activities due to which the hazardous gases are emitted. Burning of fuel is dangerous in many ways as it not only generates carbon dioxide, but also several other air pollutants that are really harmful to human health. Almost all the sectors in the global economy, including hardware manufacturing, agriculture, transportation, power production, industries etc. are among the major contributors of greenhouse gases to the atmosphere. Necessary measures to reduce this, avoid the worst effects of climate change and evolve away from fossil fuels is what we need to do right from today to save the environment.

What it does

In terms of greenhouse gas emissions, internet use accounts for 3.7% of global emissions, i.e. the equivalent of all air traffic in the world. CarbonWeb is a web extension which can be used by anyone and everyone as a means to support sustainable development. It helps us to know if a particular website uses “Green” servers (eco friendly) or not, with added features to track users’ data usage on a particular site for past one week.

How we built it

It was built using HTML,CSS and Java script

Challenges we ran into

The main challenge was to calculate the carbon footprint

Accomplishments that we're proud of

I am proud of making this easy using chrome extension which lets us know if we are using eco friendly servers

What's next for CarbonWeb

Future of CarbonWeb is creating a centralized database, data visualization and cross platform support.
