CarbonSight was inspired by the urgent need for greater transparency and personal engagement in sustainability. As global carbon emissions continue to threaten our planet, we wanted to give everyday shoppers the ability to instantly see the environmental impact of their purchases—right from their mobile device. Our team envisioned a tool that not only educates, but also rewards conscious consumer choices and fosters a community of climate action.

🚀 How We Built It CarbonSight combines cutting-edge technologies:

Augmented Reality (AR): We used A-Frame and AR.js to provide a live overlay showing carbon footprint data when scanning products.

QR Scanner: ZXing is used for reliable, cross-platform QR code recognition.

Blockchain Verification: Product sustainability claims are checked against smart contracts deployed on Polygon, ensuring data authenticity.

Reward System: Points are awarded for each scan and challenge completed, tracked via local storage and displayed in a dynamic leaderboard.

Interactive Challenges: In-app “green” challenges encourage long-term user engagement.

💡 What We Learned Integrating blockchain smart contracts into a front-end app is complex, requiring careful attention to security and transaction handling.

AR overlays offer an exciting user interface, but keeping them performant and intuitive is crucial for real-world adoption.

Gamifying climate actions (with points, leaderboards, and challenges) helps drive sustained participation—turning sustainability from a chore into a daily habit.

⚡ Challenges We Faced Scanning Accuracy: Ensuring barcode/QR detection works reliably across devices and lighting conditions.

UX Design: Creating an interface that is bold (our signature pink!) yet clean and distraction-free for scanning and tracking.

Blockchain Delays: Polygon transactions can occasionally lag when verifying claims; we mitigated this with informative status overlays.

Data Sourcing: Getting accurate product carbon footprint data from external APIs took significant research and validation.

✨ Our Inspiration The project was fueled by the dream of making sustainability data not just accessible—but actionable. By bridging AR, blockchain, and gamification, we hope CarbonSight empowers a new generation to track, verify, and improve their footprint, day by day.
