About Carbonize
🌍 Inspiration
We realized the carbon credit system is very centralized, slow, and at times, not transparent, which is a huge issue considering people need to act now to reverse the effects of climate change. Some of our group had prior experience with blockchain tech and proposed we could create this decentralized solution — Carbonize— empowering anyone to gain and trade credits while rewarding everyone for reducing their carbon footprint, all while increasing transparency through the blockchain.
🔨 How We Built It
- Blockchain: Created on the Polygon network
- Smart Contracts: Transparent credits issued and traded through smart contracts, created using the Remix Ethereum IDE
- Frontend & UX: A web-based platform using basic HTML with Flask, where anyone can easily track and trade.
Additional Feature Integrations: The group had used Beautiful Soup to web scrape Google News and find articles related to sustainability. Then used Perplexity API keys to summarize the articles. The website has a blog section where these stories will be posted daily.
🚀 Challenges We Faced
- Authentication: Initially created Auth0 authentication for the website, but due to migration issues and time constraints, the component was scrapped.
- Connecting the UI to the Backend: We had 2 different UIs and wanted to incorporate the backend logic into the second iteration, but due to time constraints, we scrapped the second UI.
🎯 What We Learned
The power of blockchain technology can greatly increase speed and transparency in all forms of life, even to help protect our planet.
