Climate change is one of the biggest global challenges, but many people don’t clearly understand how their everyday habits contribute to carbon emissions. Transportation, food choices, electricity usage, and lifestyle decisions all add up, yet the impact is often invisible.

CarbonIQ was created to make carbon footprints easier to understand. The goal was to build a tool that helps people visualize their environmental impact and discover practical ways to reduce it, turning complex sustainability data into something simple and actionable.

What it does

CarbonIQ is an interactive carbon footprint calculator that analyzes a user's lifestyle and estimates their environmental impact. Users enter information about their transportation habits, energy consumption, food choices, and daily activities.

The platform then calculates an estimated carbon footprint and presents it through clear visualizations and insights. CarbonIQ also provides comparisons and recommendations that help users understand how their choices affect the environment and what changes could reduce their emissions.

How we built it

CarbonIQ was built using a web-based technology stack focused on performance and interactivity.

The interface was developed with HTML, CSS, and JavaScript, with a black and gold design theme to create a modern and premium user experience. Smooth animations and interactive elements were implemented to guide users through the calculator and make the results more engaging.

Charts and visual data representations were used to break down carbon emissions into categories such as transportation, energy use, and lifestyle choices, helping users better understand where their impact comes from.

Challenges we ran into

One of the main challenges was designing a user interface that felt intuitive while still presenting complex environmental data. Translating carbon emission calculations into something simple and visually understandable required careful design and iteration.

Another challenge was optimizing animations and visual effects so that the interface remained smooth and responsive without causing performance issues.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We are proud of creating a tool that makes sustainability more accessible and understandable. CarbonIQ transforms abstract environmental data into clear insights that users can interact with.

We also successfully built a polished interface with engaging animations and a design that encourages users to explore their environmental impact.

What we learned

Through this project we learned a lot about both technical development and sustainability awareness.

On the technical side, we improved our skills in building interactive web applications, optimizing animations, and designing clean user interfaces.

We also gained a deeper understanding of how different lifestyle choices contribute to carbon emissions and how technology can help people make more environmentally conscious decisions.

What's next for CarbonIQ

In the future, CarbonIQ could expand to include more advanced features such as personalized sustainability plans, real-time carbon tracking, and more detailed emission models.

We also plan to improve the data insights and add additional visualization tools to help users better understand how small changes in their daily habits can make a meaningful difference over time.built it
