Inspiration

Carbon markets are growing rapidly, but the systems behind them are still fragmented, manual, and difficult to trust. Many carbon projects—especially in Africa and emerging markets—rely on spreadsheets, disconnected documents, and slow verification processes, making it hard for communities and organizations to prove impact or attract buyers.

We built CarbonFlow after recognizing a simple gap: there is no modern operating system for carbon projects that brings together project management, verification readiness, and carbon credit intelligence in one place.

Our inspiration came from real conservation and reforestation efforts in Kenya, where impact is significant but infrastructure for tracking, verification, and commercialization is still limited.

What it does

CarbonFlow Intelligence Platform is a full-stack SaaS platform that acts as an operating system for carbon projects.

It allows organizations to:

Create and manage carbon projects Upload and organize verification documents Track carbon credits generated, verified, sold, and retired Measure real-world environmental and community impact Assess project risk using structured intelligence Evaluate verification readiness before audits Showcase projects to potential carbon credit buyers via a marketplace

In short, CarbonFlow turns carbon projects into structured, verifiable, and investable digital assets.

How we built it

We built CarbonFlow as a production-grade full-stack SaaS application using modern cloud and web technologies:

Frontend: Next.js (Vercel) with a responsive SaaS dashboard UI Backend: Next.js Server Actions for secure server-side logic Database: Amazon Aurora PostgreSQL with Prisma ORM for type-safe data modeling Storage: AWS S3 for secure document uploads and project files Authentication: JWT-based authentication with role-based access control (RBAC) Architecture: Multi-tenant SaaS design supporting organizations and teams

We also implemented a Judge Demo Mode, allowing a guided walkthrough of the entire system in under 60 seconds.

Challenges we ran into

One of the biggest challenges was designing a system that balances complex carbon market data with simplicity of user experience. Carbon projects involve multiple layers—documents, credits, verification, impact metrics, and risk assessment—and structuring this into a usable SaaS product required careful data modeling.

Another challenge was ensuring multi-tenant security and data isolation while maintaining performance and scalability using a relational database architecture.

Finally, designing a demo experience that communicates a complex system in under one minute required significant UX simplification and storytelling refinement.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We are especially proud of:

Building a fully functional, production-ready SaaS system in a hackathon timeframe Designing a clear product narrative: “Stripe for Carbon Projects” Creating a guided 60-second judge demo experience Integrating real-world African conservation project narratives to ground the platform in reality Implementing a scalable AWS-based architecture using Aurora PostgreSQL and S3 Translating a complex climate finance problem into a simple, usable product experience

What we learned

We learned that building impactful systems is not just about technical complexity—it is about clarity, structure, and communication.

We also learned how powerful modern full-stack tools (Vercel, Next.js, AWS, Prisma) are for rapidly building scalable SaaS platforms.

Most importantly, we gained deeper insight into carbon markets, especially the importance of transparency, verification readiness, and trust in climate finance systems.

What's next for CarbonFlow Intelligence Platform

Next, we plan to evolve CarbonFlow into a global carbon infrastructure platform by:

Adding real-time carbon credit trading capabilities Integrating satellite and GIS-based verification data Expanding AI-driven risk and compliance scoring Enabling automated revenue distribution to communities Supporting multi-country regulatory frameworks Building mobile-first tools for field data collection

Our long-term vision is to make CarbonFlow the global operating system for climate impact projects, enabling transparency, trust, and scalability in carbon markets worldwide.
