Inspiration
Based on our preliminary research and findings, we found out that 90% of people want to adopt more sustainable approaches to their way of life but only 40% are willing to take drastic steps to achieve that. Additionally, people these days in general do not have the time due to their intensely busy schedules to go out of their way (essentially anything that incurs cost or time) to do something that favours the environment. But the one factor that we observed which was driving a lot of end-user engagement in today’s day and time is gamified activities and memes. That’s where the inspiration for our project was born, which is more of a “memefied” way to engage users.
What it does
The app drives user engagement by taking them through a short questionnaire upon signing up that is entirely composed of auto-generated memes that fall into two categories based on their carbon friendliness (namely carbon friendly and unfriendly). The questionnaire is comprised of ten pairs of memes and upon its completion, the users accumulate a certain score based on their carbon friendliness and those scoring the highest are granted the title of carbon daddy while all others are labelled as carbon kids. From a certain cohort taking the quiz at the same time, it is decided that the carbon daddy is the most carbon-friendly person and is therefore responsible for pushing certain tasks / push notifications to the carbon kids that aim to make their lives more environmentally friendly and actually helping to contribute towards making a positive impact. Users also accumulate points by completing these tasks which can at a later stage be redeemed as vouchers from various brands that we intend to partner with in order to avail their CSR initiatives.
How we built it
The app was constructed with flutter as the front end and firebase as the backend
Challenges we ran into
The initial challenge we ran into was the idea itself as we had a lot of ideas and complexity whose workload seemed to be exceeding the time limit of 24 hours allotted by the hackathon. We decided to narrow it down to an app that aims to drive user engagement while educating the userbase on impactful initiatives or personalised tasks that can really help them to make their lives or the environment in which they thrive more carbon-friendly. The next challenge was the implementation of the app as it has a lot of automation factors.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Managed to cover all specs and features within 24 hours 30+ active users Affirmative decisions from CSR initiatives to collaborate
What we learned
Learned how to work under pressure as a team with a strict deadline. Through our research, we learned of unconventional and unique ways to tackle sustainability and climate. The amalgamation of a diverse team coming from different geographical and cultural backgrounds led to the development of a solution that caters to a wider audience.
What's next for CarbonDad
Improving UI and expanding support to CarbonMommys. Establishing partnerships with sustainable companies to kickstart our brand ambassador program.
