🌱 Carbon Wallet
Inspiration
Climate change is one of the biggest global challenges, but most people have no idea how their daily purchases affect the environment. We wanted to make sustainability simple by showing users the carbon footprint of their spending and motivating them to make greener choices.
What it does
Carbon Wallet connects securely to a user's bank transactions, estimates the carbon emissions of every purchase using predefined emission factors, and displays a daily, weekly, and monthly carbon footprint. Users earn Green Points for eco-friendly purchases, which can be redeemed through partner companies.
How we built it
- Frontend: Flutter
- Backend: Firebase
- Database: Cloud Firestore
- Authentication: Firebase Auth
- Carbon Footprint Engine: Category-based emission calculations
- Rewards System: Green Points for sustainable spending
Challenges we faced
The biggest challenge was estimating carbon emissions accurately from transaction categories while keeping calculations fast and simple. We also focused on designing a clean, user-friendly interface that makes sustainability easy to understand.
What we learned
We learned about carbon accounting, fintech integration, secure authentication, Firebase development, and designing user experiences that encourage sustainable habits.
