Inspiration
We were willing to do something that helps the environment on this new year! So we thought how about we make a website to educate and inculcate habits for reduction in carbon emissions using Blockchain. After all we have to keep ourselves accountable!
What it does
This project allows us to know more about the impacts of carbon emissions and take a pledge on this new year to save the planet. This is done using Twilio's SendGrid API and Hedera Blockchain. Also, we provide a carbon calendar using which we can add our daily carbon emissions and track them. This carbon footprint is also added to Hedera making it immutable and helping to keep us accountable to our carbon emission!
How we built it
Our website frontend is built using React.
- The Pledge is implemented using SendGrid API from Twilio and Hedera Smart Contract
- We are logging the carbon footprint on the Hedera Blockchain for immutability
- Graph.JS has been used to create a Graph of Carbon Footprint logged by the user in the Carbon Calendar.
- We are using Express for the backend server.
Challenges we ran into
Very difficult to learn and implement Hedera for first time, and also to implement and add technologies like Twilio and Hedera to make our project more impactful but with great team efforts we were able to do this.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We were proud to make a project that aims for improving sustainability and starting the new year with a new project especially at an MLH Hackathon!
What we learned
We were using Hedera first time and it was great fun to learn and implement successfully in our project in this short period of time.
What's next for Carbon Tracker
- We will make it more user friendly so that more number of people can help in reducing carbon emissions.
- We would like to make a Dashboard for a user
- Also, provide some tokens or NFTs based on top performing users.
