INSPIRATION

We face a lot of environmental issues today, be it climate change, global warming, increased pollution levels, decreasing forest covers, everything leading to increased carbon footprint and towards a future global catastrophe. And yet the absence of caution and consciousness towards the protection of the environment is all the more baffling.

So we thought we could come up with a solution that could help us do more eco-friendly practices, and help in making decisions independently which are more conscious of the environment.

WHAT IT DOES

CARBON RATING basically calculates a person's Carbon Footprint based on his/her inputs on the actions he/she does throughout the day and suggests eco-friendly alternatives which will in turn help in molding a person into being more conscious of the environment and sustainable practices.

HOW WE BUILT IT

We planned to build the app with Flutter and Firebase interfacing, but due to a lack of time, and technical expertise, we couldn't get started with it.

Here's a walkthrough to our app, CARBON RATING -

The user will be presented with the home page on opening the app.

The home page would have a greeting for the participant (eg. Good Morning Alonzo (just an example name)) followed by his Carbon Rating which is denoted by a scale from 0 to 10. There is an image of carbon footprint that will turn greener as the Carbon Rating value decreases. Below that, the person will be presented with a button to show tips to improve his Carbon Rating (reducing Carbon Footprint) (another page, the Tips page). These will be updated in accordance with the activities the user updates in his Food and Other Activities page, to ensure that they gradually and consistently improve on their Carbon Rating, so that the user can get acclimatized, making sure that he consistently achieves these goals every day, and to inculcate a sense of sustainability.

Swiping to the left, the user will be presented with all the pages of the app (Home, Food, Other Activities, Tips)

On the Food page, the user will be allowed to enter the food he/she consumes at different times of the day (the photographs of those are accepted as proof). On submission, the user will be presented with an option to share the status with the photo attached, to various Social Media handles (Twitter, Facebook, etc), showing that the person has completed that particular goal. By default, we plan to include dishes from various cuisines from across the world. In case the person does not find a particular dish, he/she can contribute by adding that dish to the list with its basic ingredients, so that the app can calculate the Carbon Footprint of that particular meal.

On the Other Activities page, the person is given activities based on his/her Carbon Rating (like Planting Sapling, eating Vegetables, Cutting down on meat, Cycling, or taking Public Transport on the way to Office/School, etc). Here also the user gets to attach an image as proof, and on submission will get prompts for uploading it on Social Media handles. The tasks will be updated as the Carbon Rating of the person improves gradually, so that the user is consistently able to hit all the goals given to him/her, instead of setting the bar high at the start itself - which would only turn down a person from being environmentally conscious of his/her actions.

ACCOMPLISHMENTS that we're proud of

Despite the fact that we were unable to make the final product, we are very glad that we were given a chance to work together for a good cause. The brainstorming sessions we had were amazing. Ideas kept pouring in and we were able to come to this mind-blowing concept in which the users themselves will be environmentally conscious. We believe that our idea will have a good impact on our society and nature and we will continue to make a difference.
