Inspiration

Not many people are aware of what carbon footprint exactly is and not many of many people are aware that there is something called digital carbon footprint. So, I decided to create something simple that can explain you both general carbon footprint and digital carbon footprint. Major inspiration was driven by : http://www.muskfoundation.org/

What it does

This site emits extremely low carbon emissions. Lower than 97% of webpages tested. Being green, it is also visually appealing. Plus, it lists the ways to reduce your individual carbon emissions, ways to reduce digital carbon emissions and a carbon footprint calculator.

How we built it

Using github-pages as code hosting platform, I built this with HTML5, CSS3 and Javascript. What have I done to make this site green?

1. I have used no images (not even a favicon) because images are a lot of data.
2. The whole file size is 28 kB.
3. No server (because was not requires).
4. Tried to use less JS.
5. Used only one custom font and used web safe fonts.
6. Clean code All these things help the website to load faster and emit less carbon emissions and energy.

Challenges we ran into

Making this site look good without using any images and keeping code as much short to reduce load which leads to emission of energy.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

I have successfully been able to create a carbon footprint calculator and a site that is very good for our environment.

What we learned

I learned how to create websites that are both low carbon-emitting and good looking/

What's next for Carbon Print
