Inspiration
We wanted to create a carbon footprint calculator that is able to calculate the environmental impact of a specific trip using Google Cloud's Distance Matrix and Geocoder API. This way, people can calculate the environmental impact of a daily commute or a planned vacation is and possibly decide a more eco-friendly option.
Challenges
It was difficult learning how to use Google's API and implementing them into our code. After a lot of trial and error and research we eventually learned how to implement it correctly.
Learning
We learned how to implement APIs and also got a better understanding of GitHub and git commands.
What's next for Carbon Footprint Travel Calculator
Going forward with our carbon footprint calculator, we are going to push to learn React.js in order to make a more user friendly experience for inputting the types of emissions and for informing them of their total footprint. Additionally we would like to implement a way of giving suggestions to the user on their emissions relative to the average emissions by integrating the google-directions-api to give walking directions and to inform how much less CO2 would be emitted.
